air deflectors won't stay in place

Post by two_wheeled »

I installed these air deflectors under the mirrors, but above 65 mph they won't hold their position anymore and slam to the left or right. I tried different torque ranges on them but it didn't help. I finally went as far as to squish the oblivion out of those useless rubber washers and really tightened them up, but they still won't hold. I'm going to remove the rubber washers and maybe stack some regular steel washers there and snug it up again, but I still want to be able to adjust them on the road.
What do you guys do to secure yours?

Try using Nylon washers.

I was going to say the same thing, I have nylon washers on mine, and they hold them fine.

I have the same deflectors and get annoyed for the same reason. But, at the end of the day, I only set those deflectors at wide open or fully closed anyway. The other deflectors I do set "in between" and they stay.

The National Cycle version of these deflectors have ratchet detents to hold them in place. I do not know how well they work or how long they last however.

I have had the same problem wit my air wings too (when I could ride) . Until this last year I was able to ride, then they started staying in position, I always carried small wrenches so I could tighten the posts up, all it took was that pesky 40mph windy days or a
18wheeler at just wrong speed, and they would be lose again. I used to start the ride, check tire pressure, air wings, etc. The ones on my 1500 never needed the same attention...odd!
