A different Start Issue

Post by Piddler »

I just bought this 2002 GL1800. Went to a guys house to see it and test drove it. Fell in love with it. It started right up several times. Headed home some 20 miles away, stopped for gas and it hasn't started without pushing since. The seller came to the gas station to help figure out what is wrong. We came to the conclusion after working on it for several hours that it must be the Starter Solenoid. It clicks when the start button is pushed. Thought it might be the kill switch but when in the off position there is no click. I put a new Solenoid on and still nothing. i put a new battery in while at that gas station.
There's about 66,500 miles on it and I wanna ride!!!

First things first

Check fuses and for fuel pump noise at the start (it may sound for a few seconds after start switch in run position).

There are 2 starter solenoids in series. They are different part numbers but the same solenoid except for the red connector on one. They are both located behind the battery in a rubber holder. If they click when you use the starter button the starter should spin as the kill switch, side stand switch, and bank angle sensor would prevent the solenoid activation. Check both solenoids. If one is bad replace both.

Get a test light or meter and trace the power from the battery to the starter. Find out where it stops. Just because a relay or solenoid clicks doesn't mean it's working. Unless you can see or hear electrons, visual and auditory inspections just don't cut it. Measure and be sure.

Not sure what that part number is. I see items 8 and 9 in the parts fische under battery. 35850-MCA-003 and 35850-MZ0-J10. These are expensive. I used some from eBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/294404799751? ... media=COPY
I just swapped out the red connector from the old one. It will work if you don’t but be sure you connect the front solenoid to the correct connector.

Got It!!
Once I realized there were two solenoids and after Rambozo suggested the testing and I was getting burned out and dropping out work to fiddle with my bike. I hunkered down and finished a planset for a Solar job and went to work on the bike. This time I was able to get the saddle bag almost completely off. I pulled both solenoids off and tested the conductors. Only one had power so I now I get it.
"In series" he said. I put the solenoid with the red clip back where is was supposed to go and put the new solenoid in the master solenoid. The one with the power to it. Now we have ignition and off we go.

thank you all for your input
Greg
