Jumpy throttle in 1st gear

Post by Piddler »

Hello all
I just bought this 2002 GL1800 and it seems to be difficult to gradually apply throttle in tight slow turns. It's like an on off switch to some degree. Can this be in the clutch adjustment dept or do I just need a lot more practice?
I've been watching Motorman videos and do need to practice but my last two bikes didn't have this touchy of a throttle vrs Clutch issue. My last bike was a 1986 Yamaha Venture 1300 and before that a 1984 Venture 1200. before that a 1982 GL1100 preceded by a 1979 KZ650

1st gear in a GL1800 is incredibly low ratio, many riders don't use 1st at all and just start in 2nd.
There are 10 types of people in the world, those that understand binary numbers, and those that don't.

Thank You
I'll try that and see if I can go slow enough to preform the figure eight and other slow maneuvering turns to build my confidence at maneuvering as such. I'm a little shaky in that regard.

While I have a 1500, when I took the Ride Like a Pro class, the instructors suggested I try some of the maneuvers in 2nd gear instead of 1st.
It helped quite a bit in some of the maneuvers we were doing.
I have practiced enough now that I can do them all in 1st gear, but I have a lot more time on the bike to learn it's quirks.

At low speed it's less about throttle and more about clutch and brake to be smooth.

Great, I can't wait to try it out. Might be a bit too hot for me right now, The next 5 days are going to be, today 113, then 111, 102, 109 then 107 before it starts cooling down to comfortable 90s. Yikes!
Thank God for AC and a swimming pool.

2nd gear for slow speed is best -
1st gear is just to get it moving forward so you can reach 2nd (although I have started from a dead stop in 2nd many times)
