2001 GL1800 ignition coils

Post by Papa Fred »

Will the ignition coils from a newer year fit a 2001 GL1800A?
Previous owner wasn't big on maintenance..spark plugs hadn't been changed in..??? Last fall when I changed plugs, 2 of the boots were essentially glued onto the plugs. Boots were damaged (torn) during removal. Temporarily fixed with a couple of wraps with electrical tape.
Checking on-line for replacement wires / boots I see many advertised with coils but from newer years than my 2001. The engine runs fine, but with a couple of questionable boots in play, if I'm that deep into the front getting to the plug wires, and if alternate year coils will work, I thought getting "newer" coils would make sense.

Opinions, suggestions, hints...bring 'em on.

If I'm wrong there will be others to correct me but I believe at least the 01 to 05 would be the same and possibly up to the 08 but quite possibly good through 17. However they rarely go bad and are quite expensive.

Black electrical tape will be fine but if you see fit, changing the wires would be a good idea, they can and will go bad especially the older they get.
It's not what you buy, it's what you build.

Thanks for the quick reply. I kinda thought (from other topics and discussions) that the '01-'05 were pretty much interchangeable but wanted some input from the Wing World before buying more stuff I probably don't need. With just over 65,000 miles on the bike I'm guessing there's quite a bit of life left in the coils, so I'll just track down a set of wires. How much could they POSSIBLY be right?

For coils, 2001-05s have a different part number then the 2006-17 Wings. The connectors are differnet and pin count are different.

From my arm chair, it sounds like you need a new set of plug wires. Parts 4-9 in the fishe below.
