Thinking of adding a trunk rack

Post by gatorslayer »

Now I know better than to overload it, and maybe I just want a little more bling, I'd be interested to hear pros/cons/specific models. I haven't seen any that offer significant bracing, and if I go this route I'll likely (over)engineer some support bracing, so any thoughts on that would be welcome.
I ride a 2016 audio/comfort.

There is an article about reinforcing the trunk lid so you can carry something a little bigger than a feather on the trunk rack.

Check this out.

I added reinforcement to the inner trunk lid on both my 1100 and my 1500 in order to support the trunk rack, but it's still just a plastic lid with hinges and latches not meant for a big load. I have strapped things on there for transport, but never more than a few pounds. Usually lightweight, bulky things. I have a trunk lid bag like this one and have used it to put lightweight bulky things like rain gear and bike covers when I didn't have room in the trunk/saddlebags.

There are a couple different ways top reinforce the trunk lid. Star washers under the legs is an easy one. My 97 SE had a thin metal bar on the inside of the trunk lid that went from bolt to bolt. it was installed by the previous owner

Sadly, no longer made, but this was a pretty solid system for supporting a rack - put this on my bike soon after I got it.

http://goldwing.eurekaboy.com/trunksupport.htm

Also helps keep the trunk lid from stressing the area where the two pieces (top/bottom) meet when closed.

I made my own out of ABS pipe, you can see it here: Reinforcing your trunk rack

That is showing the process on my 1100, but I did the exact same to my 1500 as well.

WingRider is what I installed long ago. On my trunk, I have a Hondaline spoiler, and vanity mirror ... no luggage rack. My WingRider support system is basically there to support the trunk from chaffing when carring a passenger.
