Pipes

Post by penguinlvr57 »

Let me preface by saying I know very little about mechanical stuff with bikes. Okay, that's out of the way. I have a 2002 Goldwing1800 with a Champion trike kit. The previous owner put Cherry Bomb pipes on it, but the sound when I'm riding absolutely drives me crazy. It's less of a rumbling sound and more like a nasty buzz or drone. I have the original pipes and would like to put them back on but have no idea how to do it. Is it just a matter or nuts and bolts or is there any welding or anything involved? I've never done anything like this and would love to avoid taking it to a service technician if I can, as I just had it in and wound up with a sizeable bill. If there are any videos or anything I can access to help, that would be great. If you think this is something I shouldn't attempt, please be honest. Thanks in advance everyone.

It all depends on how your modifications were done. The stock mufflers are a pretty easy bolt on installation. However, there is a good chance that your "Cherry Bombs" may have been welded on. The first thing is to check over what you have on the bike and what your stock mufflers look like. Post photos here if you are unsure of what has been done.
The stock mufflers should look like this, with a clamp ring on the front and a tab to hold them in place.

Jack er up (safely) and climb under there. The original mufflers slipped on. Id guess the cherry bombs did the same?
You know the original mufflers have a mounting tang, cant imagine whats left after a trike conversion.
Send good photos!

Like the other person said take pics if youre not sure and post them here. I know on my Lehman the exhaust pipes mount just like a stock wings pipes being bolted on with stock gaskets on the pipes.

Here's some pics of the pipes and the original pipe (I have two but only took one).

Looks possible. The photos don't show some parts, but what is there looks ok. Hold up your stock pipes and see that they more or less line up. The angles don't quite look right, but that could just be camera angle.
From the factory there are catalytic converters right in front of the mufflers. It looks like maybe some pipes were added to adapt the cherry bombs. Maybe they can be removed to allow the stock setup? Or they might need to be cut? Can't tell from the photos. Or just take the trike and the stock mufflers to a muffler shop and tell them to make it happen. With a trike you just never know what has been changed.

From your pics it looks like they were just bolted on with muffler clamps. I would take one of the Cherry bombs off and try mating the corresponding stock muffler up and see it it aligns with the brackets for mounting. Unless the previous owner removed those also.

I think the stock muffler attaches where the red circle is and you will remove the blue S shaped pipe. Can't see the joint good enough to see if it is clamped, welded, or bailing wired together. :o

On my Lehman theres an "S" shaped pipe that connects the stock headers to the stock mufflers due to the shape of the trike frame and body. So I would take the cherry bomb off first before removing the "S" pipe.
