Right Handle Bar switch Assembly (Controls)

Post by dlewis1906 »

I was on a trip in Sturgis and my wing would not start. All the lights were on and the starter relays were clicking. I was able to start it by bump starting it. I thought the kill switch was acting up again and I used contact spray to try to get it working again. I eventually got it to a Honda shop the next day and they told me that I needed to replace the switch, but they were able to get it to start. The tech told me that he just banged the switch, pressed the starter button and it started (the Fonzie method). Has anyone experienced this? What was your fix?

Here we replace right kill switch assemblies often. The good news is that they are still available. To test the switch, while on a center stand and running in 'N', we'll do 3 tests ... tap the switch with a knuckle, or we'll grab it with 3 fingers and a thumb, and rock it forward and rear, or rock it from left to right. As you know it should only kill the engine if turn to either kill positions. If it fails any of those tests, it is considered overly sensative and needs replace. Sometimes they'll become so sensitive that when going over a bad bump, like a railroad tracks, the engine will die.

Instead of trying to lube yours, it sounds like yours should have been replaced then.

Are you replacing the entire assembly? or Are you opening the assembly and replacing the kill switch parts?

The entire switch assembly. The individule switches are not sold seporatly. If your Wing is a 2010, it'd be part #2 in the fishe below. https://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/hon ... e-switch-2

Thank you for the information. It is funny that you mention your testing. I had it to cut off on me while riding a few years back. I disassembled the switch and lube it really good. I had not had any issues until This trip cross country where we went through all the seasons (LOL).

FYI, this is an 06 wing. Do you have the part number for the replacement?

Part #2. https://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/hon ... e-switch-1

Your failing switch should have been caught long ago. Here at JustWings - GL1800 Specialty Service and Repair, we would do the above testing at least every 8k. Although such checking is not part of Honda's Maintenace Schedule, since this is all we do here, not only have we learned the importance of checking the kill switch, but there are other important checks that we do here too.

Here's the important part. Such things like excessive up/down movement in the clutch lever, excessive throttle play, and a failing kill switch, can be checked when a customer pulls upto the front door. They represent strong signs of a poorly maintained Wing. Is it fair to pre-judge them like that ... no, but I can think of no examples in 15 years, where Wing came here, and that statement not be true. Does it mean that your's would be one of those, NO ... or do I mean Yes ... what it really means is that if those 3 issues are true on your Wing, then those 3 items need attention. Another is if changing brake or clutch fluid. Basically, the old brake/clutch fluid on a well maintained Wing will look nearly like the new fluid when changed. At most, the old will be slightly cloudy, and the new clear. On my 5th gen with 185k on the ODM, I can hardly tell the differece in the old/new fluid. Keep in mind that Honda intended that these machine be continental tours, and the best change for one to be exactly that is by following their Maintenace Schedule.
