no brake or dash lights

Post by nickinegreb »

I have a 2016 level 1 gl1800. Fuse #20 for tail lights and dash gauges blows as soon as key is turned on. If I remove tail light relay it won't blow but as soon as relay is replaced fuse blows again. I switched relays and still no change

I do not see any pinched wires and have disconnected every connection I can find under seat, both side pockets and removed dash but still blows fuse.

We did recently change antifreeze and poured water over radiator when done but I don't see anything there that would cause this if wet.
Only extra electrical stuff are fog lights but I also disconnected those. Still blows fuse

Any thoughts or perhaps a wiring diagram would be appreciated

Do you have rear brakes that flash when used ??? If so be sure that unit is disconnected too. There is a wire in the right hinge area for a rear spoiler that can break, and if it gets grounded to another broken wire, it can blow fuses. Sometimes broken wires can be felt thru the harness, while at other times the harness at each side of the trunk hinges must be cut open to inspect them. Also, sometimes wires get smashed when the seat is installed. To check for that, flip the seat over and look at the rubber gromets that rest under the rear of the seat, and rest ontop of the frame. Be sure that there are no harnesses near where they make contact with the frame.

Thank you for the suggestion. Brake lights still appear to operate normally, even after I unplugged everything I can find under seat. Looks like the brake lights wire disappears behind the side case. Perhaps there is a connector under the case for the brake lights. With everything I can find disconnected under the seat it still blows a fuse when key is turned on

although I disconnected the 14 pin grey connector by the relay box and still had fuse blow I found this one last night. Connector C31 in the 2012 electrical manual. This was behind the right luggage side case. Not sure what caused this but I have to think I'm on the right path.

That's a common issue with that connector. Usually it causes odd flashing or dim turn signals and such, but since brake lights and turn signals are electically related, it can cause issues like yours also.

Here we would inspect the other connectors within C31, and any that are damaged or discolored would be rewired into a new 4 or 6-pin connector. Some owners will hardwire around it.

To seporate the connector, with a blade screw drive, push down here and lightly twist. If there is resistance, try squirting it with BrakeClean. Yours might not want to seporate.
