Loose Trunk
Hello,
I just purchased a 2007 Goldwing. One issue this bike has is that the trunk is a little bit loose. The whole thing wobbles when you close the trunk lid. Any suggestions on how to tighten it up?

Re: Loose Trunk
The first thing is to check all the fasteners. You might just have some loose or missing.

Re: Loose Trunk
I purchased a new to me 012, the trunk lid rattled over every bump.
Took me awhile to figure out why.
The trunk lid could be picked up at the speaker area on one side.
One of the screws was missing for part of the hinge but what was even worse the part of the trunk it bolted into was missing also. Difficult to see as everything in that area is black. Compared to other side. Ordered and replace broken hinge. $60
Still rattled.
I took some felt furniture pads with adhesive back and cut to fit where lid closed against hinge as lid was still lifting some at speaker areas, on both sides. Imprint of hinge in the felt after opening & closing a few times.
Still rattled.
I got some rubber hose and put inside of rubber gasket around the lid, like some said to do. No rattling but the lid had to be slammed shut. At times while riding the lid would show "open" on dash.
I removed the rubber hose and tightened trunk catches & strikers. I used blue Loctite on the screws
No rattles.
As said before, look for missing fasteners & broken parts and tighten everything down.
Good luck. Take Care

Re: Loose Trunk
Make sure you check what the others are saying. Also, be sure to remove everything from the trunk, including the matt, and inspect the trunk floor for cracks.

Re: Loose Trunk
Thanks for your input, as a new Goldwing owner I’m trying to make my way through all the complexities of the bike.
However, It’s not the trunk lid.
Which is what every article i look at talks about.
It’s the trunk itself. I bought the bike on consignment so I didn’t have the previous owner there to discuss what the history is. Further complicating the matter is that once I got it home I found that the little compartment in the floor of the trunk (where owners manual should be?) has been closed entirely with fibreglass just under the lid. Any thoughts as to why the fibreglass and how to tighten up the entire trunk assembly?

Re: Loose Trunk
If you dont have a manual nows the time to get one as youll need it for many other times while doing maintenance on your bike. I would remove the underside of the trunk which is screwed from the inside of the trunk and check the mounts underneath to both the trunk and to the frame.

Re: Loose Trunk
The compartment in the trunk houses the radio and CB radio if equipped. I don't recall if there are any truck mounting fasteners under the radio. I have no idea why someone would fiberglass it as access is needed occasionally.

Re: Loose Trunk
Yes. The fibreglass seems weird to me and something that would raise eyebrows at places like a border crossing.
Something to address before next spring.

Re: Loose Trunk
Maybe there was a crack in the trunk, or maybe there was crack in the trunk.

Re: Loose Trunk
Number 18 is lid for CB
Blue circled item rattling, maybe lense is loose for license plate light. Or material used to do the repair let go and is bouncing around but I would have thought the bottom repair you see would have fallen off.
Strange indeed.
Good luck
Please let us know what you find

Re: Loose Trunk
Thanks for including those drawings. Very helpful. So really I’m dealing with 2 issues. The #18 lid was glued to the fibreglass that covers where the cb/cd would be. I thought that this might be somehow connected to the loose trunk. But I’m hearing from some that the loose trunk cannot be fixed by getting inside that cb/cd area anyways. However the fibreglass has to come out, especially because I plan to travel into the US this spring and it has to be openable. On the schematic what #’s correspond to where the trunk is secured to the frame?
Thanks for all the assistance. Very appreciated.

Re: Loose Trunk
Hi Experts!!!! I'd like to know if there is a reinforced substitute for 82310-MCA-A60ZA. This part keeps cracking over and over.
It's nonsense how this heavy lid seats only in this tiny piece of plastic. Do you guys happen to know if there is a metallic version of this part?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Loose Trunk
The trunk box os held in place with 4 bolts inside the trunk. There heads are an 8mm, and they sit at all 4 corners. On most, you'll have to lift the carpet. Be sure to inspect all 4 corners for cracked plastic.

Re: Loose Trunk
GoldWingrGreg here from JustWings - GL1800 Specialty Service and Repair. I've seen that part break for a couple of reasons. First is from missing or incorrect fasteners holding it in place, or from the same where the lit attaches to it. Next are from accidents. Another is because the lid is to heavy. Although the trunk is designed to hold 20lbs, the trunk lid far less. Honda does give a max load spec of their Hondaline luggage rack for an F6b, that bolts to a large metal frame, as 6.6 lbs. If you have an aftermarket luggage bolted to the lid, the rack itself is probably more then that. If you use the rack, I tell everyone it is only good to hold a down pillow. Be sure there is no organizer attached to the inside of the lid. Be sure that the trunk is properly secuerly held in place. And last is from having a heavy co-rider.mariana.bogarin wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 9:33 am Hi Experts!!!! I'd like to know if there is a reinforced substitute for 82310-MCA-A60ZA. Sorry ... no, I've never seen a metal one.
