Front brake help asap, please!

Post by Kwest364 »

2004 gl1800

128k miles

I was changing pads out, noticed a caliper wobble and tightened mounting bolt. I saw play in rubber bushing/plug that sits between caliper and caliper mount arm (pics attached). I took it out thinking it was something I needed to tighten underneath the rubber bushing/plug, but I was wrong. I pulled bushing out by hand and there's no way I can push it back in. I have to remove gold colored bolt in there, but can't back it out far enough to slide out, and can't move pivot arm far enough to slide out other way. It's like a puzzle: ya move and loosen 1 piece, but the other piece just barely won't fit past it. How do I get that bushing back in there? The only connecting bolt is the pivot and it's covered by another rubber plug I'd have to pull at it to get access to it to hopefully be able to remove pin/bolt, slide whole caliper apart, just to clear that stupid gold colored bolt, then stick rubber bushing back in and reassemble? Or easier way? Damn, turned this 15 min job into a couple hours at least. I'm stumped and unsure how to move forward. Suggestions?

To reinstall the rubber bushing, part #13, you'll need to slide off the sub-bracket. Unfortunatly, what is keeping that from happening is that it hits a brake hose. Usually that means that the brake hose needs removed, which means reinstalling it with new crush washers and bleeding the system. However, some will pry a little on the hose elbow that is blocking the bracket from being seporated. If you choose the later method, be gentle.

Be sure to lube the caliper slide pins with a silicon gel/paste. Here at JustWings - GL1800 Service and Repair, we'd replace that rubber bushing. To reinstall, I think I push them in with a 6mm allen t-handle, but only after spraying the area with BrakeClean. If done quick enough, the BrakeClean acts as the lube to get the rubber bushing back in.
