2003 GL1800 no audio.

Post by Mobetter »

Hello everyone, new member here.
I am a new owner of a 2003 GL1800 for about a year.
I have issue with no audio.
here's how this problem arouse.
I use reverse occasionally, and the audio mutes while using this function.
then last summer, I used the reverse and the audio muted as usual only this time when I switched the revese off the audio never came back on. It's not muted with the mute switch on the left grip. Doesn't show muted on the display, squelch is down.yet since that day audio hasn't worked.
Are there electrical diagrams or service manuals available for this model.
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check the Manuals section of this web site? I see that there are service manuals available.

Have you carefully disassembled and cleaned the reverse switch?

Try cleaning the starter button switch.

Ok I'll clean both of those switches and see if that will help. Thanks Doug for the diagram Im sure I'll be digging into that if the switch cleaning fails.
I'll let y'all know what happens.

The reverse switch doesn’t have anything to do with the audio muting. Have you checked the fuse labeled “Battery”? Does your clock keep the correct time? Is anything else on the bike dead? Does it have a CB installed? Have you disconnected the battery since this started? If not, try it, leave the ground cable off for 5 minutes and reconnect and see what it does.

It thought the audio mutes on reverse is a safety function, correct me if I'm wrong, but this 03 wing mutes the audio while using reverse until it stayed muted. I am the second owner but previous owner installed a aftermarket cd changer which transmits to the fm band and wasn't particularly good audio.
I removed that and replaced with a Bluetooth module, This was functional before the audio stopped completely. When I turn the key on I do hear a faint click or pop from the speakers The battery was recently replaced. Yes this has a cb radio option.

Everything else functions properly, I have been through all fuses, all check out good.
Can someone chime in on weather the audio muted while using reverse, and if it does, does it show mute on the display while using reverse?

It mutes when you push the starter/reverse button to actually back up. It also mutes while you are starting the engine. The muting is a function of the starter button switch, not the reverse switch. It doesn’t display Mute when backing up or starting. It will only display Mute if the mute switch is latched in. Since you have checked the fuses and said everything else is good, either the audio unit has an internal failure or one of its connectors has possibly disconnected. Just a note, it takes two fuses for it to work, the “Battery” fuse and the “Audio/Acc” fuse.

Might be a little late and not sure if you resolved this but my 2010 GL1800 has a few buttons that will stick causing no audio and limited function with some of the other buttons. Mine is primarily the "audio" button. If this happens (and it does often enough) I press the button and let it spring back out. It could be any of your buttons so I would try them all. I tried a contact cleaner but that didn't seem to resolve it. This is a simple check and may find the problem. At any rate, it's worth spending the 5 minutes to see...
