Changing fork oil

Post by WVJefo »

Spring time is here so is the maintance.

My new, to me, 2003 with 26,000 miles was a bit of a barn find / estate thing I bought the end of last riding season. I don't have a heated storage shed so work is starting now.

The shop is putting my new front tire, so it is time to do brakes & forks. Did the fork oil today. Get two bottles you will need it. Forks off (break loose the cap first). I did not take off the bottom bolt, I just opened the cap pulled spacer, washer & spring, One spring has damper bolted to cap. Use a 14 mm wrench under the cap. Turn the fork over & pour into a bowl. Pump the fork a few times. On the right pump the damper a few times.

One fork was thank goodness I am changing it, the other fork was OH God dirty. Reason for additional oil Use it to flush out the crap. Add a few inches and pump the fork and or damper. I did that a few times on the dirty fork. When the oil came out clean, after all I did not disassemble, compress the fork and pour in the oil. I use the mark the clear tube method. Mark the tube at 5 inches & suck it out till it stops.

Drop in spring, washer & spacer. Remember to bolt damper back on cap. And be careful putting cap back on. Aluminium strips easy.

If you did it right the reminder of new oil and all the old oil should fill the bottles back up.

Friday is install speed bleeders, change pads & brake fluid.

Jeff
