Power Y Connector Under Left Faring Box

Post by Papillon »

Can I split the 12 Volt power coming from left side power under the faring box.
I've got a 2008 GL1800. The power supply is a three prong male plug.
I want to connect a Y connector to split the power for a GPS using the cigarette outlet and the other connection for a bluetooth converter.
The GPS is a Garmin Zumo 595.
I know I can route the GPS directly to the battery, which I have always done on other bikes, but it looks like a major ordeal on the Wing.

Any help is appreciated

Yes. I do not recall if there is a ready made one - maybe from Electrical Connection. I just used Posi-Tap connectors.

There are verious sites that sell them. Here at JustWings we often make them for ones needed here in the shop. I to beleive Electrical Connection makes, and sells them. Just so you know, never use single crimp connectors, or any connector that is sold in those small packages that hang on part store walls. Those are best for emergency repairs only.

It is pretty easy to make your own "Y" connectors with this three wire connector set from Cycle Max of Ohio. https://cyclemax.com/products/3-wire-plug-connectors

As Mike B says. If you need the crimp tool we use here, we use the HERO FRH-07 that can be found here.

Looks like the FRH-07 has been discontinued.

As an aside, you do not have to use a crimping tool to make the connections. If you are comfortable with soldering the connections, you can use some 20 gauge wire and solder it to the pins, and then install them in the connectors. I've done it that way for years.

That HERO B-14 looks suitable; just have to limit yourself to no smaller than 1.25mm (or 16 AWG) for that specific crimper.

Someone on eBay has a FRH-07 available at a crazy price if you just have to have that tool. There *are* a limited number available on Amazon, but you *really* should be doing a couple hundred crimps with a tool like that...y'know, rewiring a vintage motorcycle, for example.

16 AWG would be way too large for these Hitachi style connectors.

This crimping tool from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0863 ... =UTF8&th=1 works very well with the Hitachi Style connectors that are sold by Cyclemax of Ohio. And, they are less than $25.00.

I saw that it was discontinued. The problem with crimping tools, is that their expensive, and many are trial and error. I have several that were over $150 that we never use. We bought ours long ago with the recommendation from the web page I listed. We also use 20 gauge wire when make our "y" connectors.

I just bit the bullet and dismantled the bike and ran the GPS directly to the battery with an in line fuse.

Greg, I'm puzzled. You saw that it was discontinued but you posted it anyway. I know you are just trying to be helpful but that was not real helpful.

Sorry if my help was no help. However, if you can find one like I'm using, at least you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars like we have trying to find ones that works well for that brand of connectors. I think someone else posted where they can be purchased, and most important, they work. I'm sure I spent $80 for mine 15 years ago plus shipping.

If you don't want to make your own, as another has said, the 'Y' connectors can be purchased from various web sites. Another choice is to go to the web site where I bought my crimpers from, and possibly that guy is now suggesting another set. I trusted his advice when I bought mine.

In my world, GL1800 Service and Repair, the 2 crimpers pictured below do more then 98% of what we need. If that's not helpful, start experimenting with other crimpers, and start spending money. Good crimpers cost a lot of money. The connectors shown were all done with FRH-07.

Hey Greg, If you scroll up a few posts you will see that I posted this one and it works very well with these connectors. A substantial savings.

Thanks for the recomendation, and possibly those work well for the Hitachi connectors. We have a couple of similar pairs ... and paid for more the $25 for each pair. What I don't like about the ones we have that are similar, is that one crimp does both ... the wires and the sheithing. Both sets of ours do a so-so job. But it's very much a trial and error type of deal. But if they work, they work.
