cam chain tensioner
Hey all, I have a 2004 GL1800 with an oil leak at the cam chain tensioner lifter on the left side of the engine. It is either the gasket or the washer on the plug. Trying to find out if there is anything special to removing the lifter or will it pretty much slide out and back in.

Re: cam chain tensioner
Honda makes a special tool that unscrews the tensioner, that also holds it in place, while the valves are being adjusted. However, on the left side and because there is no space restrictions, many small screw drivers can used for reinstallation.
As for your leak, it really unusual that yours is leaking. Is there as history as to why ??? Where the valves recently adjusted and a new crush washer not used ??? If it helps, the torque on the 2 mount bolts and the bolt for the crush washer is 108 in/lbs. Here at JustWings - GL1800 Specialty Service and Repair, we would only use a 1/4" drive torque wench for that.

Re: cam chain tensioner
GoldWinergreg, can the lifter be removed with out the use of the special tool? I have only owned this bike for 4 months so don't know much history on it. It only has 32,000 miles so I wouldn't think the valves have been adjusted yet.

Re: cam chain tensioner
On the left side, yes. A special tool is not needed to remove the tensioner assy. If trying to remove the tensioner plunger from the assy., I don't know what is needed for that. I've never disassembled an assembly. To reinstall the assembly, you'll need a small bladed screwdriver. On the right side, there is no room for a small screw driver, and usually no room to remove the assembly.
If you're intending on adjusting the valves, it is best to have the special tool to do that (tensioner holder B). If you have ABS, you'll need both (tensioner holder A and B).

Re: cam chain tensioner
All I was after was to fix an oil leak. It ended up being just the crush washer on the plug on the tensioner. Thanks for the help.
