Wing resists left turns

Post by Muleskinner »

A friend recently dumped his wing while making a left turn into a parking area. He was going about 30 and leaned to the left, but the bike didn't cooperate and he had to lay it down. He said that it felt like it was resisting another left-hand curve about a week earlier. Does this sound like his anti-dive valve is occassionally malfuncting and locking up the left fork while turning?

It happened twice but in a parking lot, turning at low speed, and so puts the brake at the same time you fall on the side. I cross that his angle of the fork which is giving problem.

One way to find out would be to obtain one of those anti dive shim things and install it. It supposedly disables the antidive. I have no idea if the anti dive can do this, but would like to know what he finds out. The antidive shim kit can be had here:

Hope this helps

It could also be his steering stem bearings are worn and have formed a notch at the neutral position of steering when the wheels straight.

I would check for loose wiring around the steering stem. Maybe something is caught in the fork bridge.

Right turns are harder for most people. Another way to disable the anti-dive is to do the "nickel trick". Take a nickel and drill a 1/4" hole in the center of it. Place it between the 2 halves of the anti-dive. You can even use the orginal screws to put the antidive back together. Only costs a nickel. Resulted in a much smoother ride for me. Mine was locking up but I never noticed any effect on the steering.

Further to this... I decided to purchase this kit.. It is not expensive. Cost me $20 including shipping, which is a little more expensive than a nickel, but the fit and finish is nicer. I tried the nickel first, and it worked, so I bought this shim kit. It works just as well and does not even look like it has been added. It fits perfectly, and just extends the seperation between upper and lower parts of the anti dive. It takes about three minutes of getting used to after installation, as the front end will feel a bit less solid when stomping on the rear brake. The handling in both directions though, while using the rear brake, was improved significantly. Twisties are easier to feel, and therefore easier to negotiate. Each thing I do to improve the handling of this bike make it sportier. I have already done the front forks completely - new springs, better seals, 10 wt synthetic fork oil. Next up - rear shock and preload get a new spring and a new braided steel line. Honda could have done all this, and charged an extra thousand dollars, and I would have paid it, but I guess that would have made it look like they were admitting the bikes are poorly suspended.

I'd lean a little more on stem bearing bad after so many I've changed are falling apart

Anti Dive zero chance of affecting steering in this manner.

Any of the cables leading off the handlebars sticking, or a bad stem bearing are the likeliest of causes.

Old posts are still of interest to me..I drive a 28 year old bike.Problems resolved and long ago forgotten may have information on my bike.
I don't mind resurrecting a old thread if it can resolve my issue or clarify the trouble.
I don't remember everything I've ever read on these bikes so I do resort to the search topics often.
What were we talking about???? :?:

My son-in-law's Sportster was harder to turn left than right. His fork tubes in the triple tree were not even and I fixed it. That made the bike much easier to turn either way.

Some of us have not been a member for five years, so will have completely missed the original post. Everyone here is on a learning journey, and I personally see huge benefit in reviving old threads like this. My bike is 28 years old, so there is much significant learning for me to take from these older threads.

I've noticed that the Winter flurry (excuse the pun) of forum activity has subsided, now the weather is warming up and folks are riding their Goldwings again instead of their keyboards. Once I have exhausted the latest conversations (only takes a couple of minutes at the moment), I really appreciate the list of suggested topics appearing at the bottom of the page, as there is often something there to get my teeth into. After all, what's the point in Wing Admin curating this wonderful database of thousands of historical threads and posts if they are not going to be referenced by anyone? I know it is possible to search the archives, but having these suggested threads at the bottom of each page garners your interest for something you would have not likely thought to proactively search for. It's also nice to return to an old conversation and add new experience too!

Agreed. If the topic is still current, the age of the thread is irrelevant.

I've never understood the aversion to revisiting threads based solely on their age, and I've been helped by many, many old threads.

Being a new owner of an old bike, I probably spend more time in the "archives". Certainly more than in the "2018+" section!

It'll be ten years before I can afford a 2018. And then I'll be dredging through what is, by then, the "archives" again.

I can agree that there is a lot of value in the archives
And someone hoping to learn can access and read them and find a lot of helpful information
My reference was more to the nature of the post which resurrected the old thread - it was more political in nature than motorcycle
So I found it a bit ... off ...
If it ever stops raining I will go for a long ride and get over it ;)

I'm glad you like that, although the search algorithm I wrote that generates it is not ideal. Part of what I'm writing into the new site is a complete rewrite of the search engine that should make those suggested topics far more relevant.

I think your algorithm is perfectly imperfect wingadmin!
In my humble opinion, there needs to be a slightly fuzzy logic involved in the results returned: gives a wider scope of interesting topics to explore.

I have been riding motorcycles since1964. My Son-in-law recently had this problem and asked me to ride his bike. I told him the forks were not even in the triple tree. The left side was a quarter inch higher than the right side. We repositioned them. Torqued the bolts and problem disappeared.

Some Wings have wires in the fork area that come in from the side for fender lighting, and others will have wires coming in from the front pockets area to the handle bar area for such things as cell phones and GPSs.

There should be absolutely no wires coming in from the side of a swinging part such as a fork and handlebar assembly. If he has anything like that, the wires need routed correctly.
