brake bleeder screw conundrum 83 Interstate 1100

Post by gerald collins »

Hi Guys, I'm nearing the end of a three year resurrection of my 83 Interstate which has not run in 14 years. I'm to the point of installing and bleeding the brakes. What's happening is that the rear slave cylinder leaks profusely because the bleed screw is too short and doesn't reach the hole at the bottom to shut off the flow of fluid. As I was overhauling the slave cylinders, along with some from other bikes, I seem to recall noticing that some bleed screws were longer than most. I thought I got all of them back to the correct cylinders, but maybe I didn't. The parts diagrams I've seen online show the same screw/valve P/N for front and rear.
How could that be, because the front screw will definitely not fit the rear cylinder and shut off the flow of fluid. Has anyone encountered a longer bleed screw anywhere? Mine measure 1.090inches overall length. I could sure use some help here, even in the form of another way to stop up the bleed hole in the s/c. This is very frustrating as I am just a couple of days from putting this puppy on the street.

Thanks in advance, Gerald in Atlanta
