83 Gl1100i bad knock
I have a knock it sounds like it's on the left side and it's only when in low rpms or under load like just starting out it goes away about 2k rpm I did a carb syncing, checked the oil pressure it was 1 psi, I reset the valves to spec .004 intake .005 exhaust, did a compressor test not sure if I did it right I did it in neutral with the other spark plugs in and I got (#1=70. #2=36. #3=45. #4=68) psi that seems way to low what is the normal specs on it (83 GL1100I interstate) would it be sound to rebuild or should I replace the motor, and what engine would fit in there can I put a GL1200 or a GL1500 I hate carbs I want a fuel injected engine is there one that would bolt right up or at least would fit?any ideas what I could do with it I like the bike it's still in good condition I'm thinking about pulling the timing belt covers but I work outside and it's kind of a big job to do and also it gets bad gas milage I ran it 600 miles on it since I bought it and had to refill 5 times on a 5.3gal tank

Re: 83 Gl1100i bad knock
with those compression numbers i am surprised it even runs. by the way, compression should be checked with all 4 spark plugs removed and the throttle wide open. if you didn't have the throttle wide open during your test that would explain (at least in part) your horrible compression numbers.
poor compression, horrible gas mileage and a knock ... these do not add up to a healthy engine. there must be some hideous smoke coming out of the exhaust ???
i don't know what you hope to achieve by removing the timing belt covers. your time might be better spent looking for a good used engine and watching a youtube video on the engine re & re process. good luck.

1100 motor is the only bolt in. Otherwise you will be cutting and building the frame....
Get yourself a gl1800 for fuel injection. (None on the gl1500 and only the 85 gl1200 LTD and the 86 SEI).
I have an 01 1800 for $4,000
