WANTED 17217-463-000 Air cleaner gasket

Post by TheFalcro »

I have a 1981 GL1100 and the gaskect that seals the air filter element to the basket is curling and shrinking from age and mis-use. In this case shoddy work from mechanics and general lack of knowledge of the previous owner has made this gasket/seal become folded, curled and nearly useless. The PO had started putting grease (a lot of it) on the base of the air filter element to try and get it to make a positive seal. This gasket is of course discontinued from Honda, PN 17217-463-000 This is NOT the gasket between the bottom of the Air filter housing and the manifold. This gasket is around the top of the basket and the filter element sits directly on top of it. if someone has one used that is in decent shape (literally) I am interested. CRMS does make a repop but they are not manufacturing any right now, I am on the waiting list. I will take NOS, used or even an entire housing and basket if you don't want to separate. I will update with pictures tomorrow when I take the basket out and have the gasket in hand.

I would try boiling that one, it might recover its shape.

It works better with thermoplastics than rubber, but you never now.

Thanks I will try that. The thought actually crossed my mind so will try that today. Long term I still want to find a better one. This scooter is in pretty good condition it just needs a little love, this is one of those love areas lol. She's been off the road in the neighbors carport for three years, I am hoping that by next month I will be taking her on a few coast runs. The coastal air will help her heal and recover from her hiatus. shes not much of a looker yet but she is getting clean and after a few changes (timing belts, radiator flush and a little carb sync or rebuild) will be good as can be.

I have boiled it and now let it rest under the filter element for a few days it has retained the "new" old shape fairly well. In doing this I have discovered a new issue the cleanable (k&N style) element is too short for the bottom of the filter to press on this gasket so I am going to buy a new factory type paper element and see if it is any taller. The current filter element seems to need to be about 3/8 " (approx 10mm) taller to contact the bottom seal like it is supposed to. Thank you for the boiling suggestion it seems to have worked well
