2002 1800 Goldwing 1500.00
Well i have decided to sell my 1800. My 1200 runs well, and will probably be the last motorcycle I own at 66 years old having survived (6 years ago) 3 strokes. Can't get too excited about finishing it.
So it ids a Yellow 2002 Goldwing 1800.
When I got it it was a mess.
The pics were after i washed it and before started taking it apart and fixing.
Dead battery, wouldn't start, no brakes, blown fork seals and dirty and generally unkempt.
Now:
Has battery
Starts
Fork seals done
Progressive springs installed
Fork bushings done
Have brake shoes for all wheels
Putting the tupperware on and doing the brakes you can be riding.
The bad news;
The previous owner let California registration lapse. if you register it in Ca it (according to Ca) would be 800.00.
I got them down to 400.00 by asking to drop penalties and just let me pay back registration, usually that works.
So either you buy it as a parts bike or you register it.
After looking at out of state registration, there are a few options. Most require a ViN check signed by an allowed agent, usually a Peace Officer.
It is in Vista California, has access to tools and 1500.00 takes all of it!

Re: 2002 1800 Goldwing 1500.00
If the registration cost is keeping someone from buying this, take a look at the Vermont title process.
Vermont doesn't title motorcycles over 15 years old, or under 300cc. You can register from out of state, then take that registration to the DMV in a "title" state and get full paperwork.
That said, I don't know if this will work in the People's Republic of California for a bike that is already in their database, and/or for a California resident who is also the name on the Vermont registration. I suspect that it won't, simply because it's simple enough that even the people in Sacramento would have heard of it -- after all, SOMEONE has to pay for that stupid train . . .
An ALTERNATE idea is to have it titled and registered to a friend or relative in another state, then "borrow" it for 5-1/2 months ("He keeps it here for when he visits, and says that I can ride it" -- get a letter to go with this) before "buying" it and re-registering in California. Again, I don't know if this will work, I would check with someone who knows before counting on this.
There are REASONS that I left California . . .this is high among the reasons that I wouldn't move back!
OTOH, this looks like a good deal even if you DO get stabbed in the back over registration costs.

VT requires VIN check on motorcycles 500cc and up. ANY cop shop can do this, and the VT DMV site probably has a list of types of private company which can do it (body shops, wrecking yards, etc).
Roger that on the 1200. I like my 1500, but if I didn't have this, I would be tempted.Besides my 1200 runs great, has a poorboy, neon coils and at 66 years old i don't think i am going to do much long distance riding!

I would, but it's on the wrong side of the country-and shipping is too expensive for me. It's worth more than that just in parts!

What is the current condition, as in:
Does it start and idle?
Transmission ok?
Anything that must be done before it can be ridden?
Anything missing?

It starts and idles well.
Haven't driven it enough to know but no reports from the previous owner re transmission troubles.
Yes, after replacing the blown seal with new bushings, seals and progressive springs, the 3 brakes need pads (which I have), and the
the tupperware needs to be put back on.
I think a day would do it!

I must be missing something...
CA is a title state. Where is the title? For NY all you need is the title and doesn't care if bike's registration has expired (in terms of getting it road legal).

CALIFORNIA won't transfer title to me without back fees paid.
Secondarily the former owner's brother is a lein holder (long since paid off) but now lives in Mexico so is nearly impossible to have him sign off on the lein, so if and when the title changes hands there is that issue. I could purchase lein release insurance for about 200.00, i don't want to.
If somebody wants it a bill of sale combined with a VIN check and a Vermont or South Dakota by mail registration will allow somebody to retitle in their state.

Re: 2002 1800 Goldwing 1500.00
Okay, got it. Its not as easy as just getting a bill of sale and registrating it SD or VT. The big hurdle is the lien on the title and no way to clear it. Those states do VIN cross references with other states to prevent title fraud.froche wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 1:34 pm CALIFORNIA won't transfer title to me without back fees paid.

Personally, I will pass on it as a street bike. And I don't need it as a parts bike.
Good luck with the sale.

Nobody wants it because there's a lien on the title which means is basically useless he could only use it as parts trying to re-title it would be very difficult or impossible with a title lien on it

?You can get a title on a liened title in Ca, probably other states as well. You just purchase lein insurance, when I checked it was 100.00 for this bike. If you want ti title it in Ca you purchase lein insurance and dicker with the state. in the past I had them waive all the late fees since I wasn't the guy who caused them and just paid old reg fees. on this bike it was 400.00. So 500.00 and you have a Ca title!

Sorry but if it is so easy, why not take care of it yourself and add the cost to the bottom line on the sale price of the bike?froche wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2020 3:37 pm ?You can get a title on a liened title in Ca, probably other states as well. Since you are reluctant to do that, everyone else is shying away and probably with good reason.

Re: 2002 1800 Goldwing 1500.00
No offense, but why deal with the headaches and possible inability to resell it easily down the road? There are so many bikes out there without the hassle. And if it is so easy, why not do it yourself and make the bike more saleable?froche wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2020 3:37 pm ?You can get a title on a liened title in Ca, probably other states as well.
