Painless timing belts replacement
I've designed these blocks that I believe will make replacing belts and tensioners a lot easier and safer. They bolt in the cover holes and lock the timing pulleys in position. Uses one M6 x 50 and one M6 x 60 bolts.
The reference marks will line up with the opposite marks from the pulleys if you have the T1 mark centered so it's also a tool to check if your timing is correct. Modeled and tested on an '81 GL1100 motor. I guess it works on any 1100. I've been told that it will also work on 1000 and 1200 but I cannot be sure of this unless somebody actually test it. If you think this will help you and want a set, PM me. Price is $12 a set plus $9 shipping within US. If you are outside US send me a message with your address to calculate shipping cost.

Re: Painless timing belts replacement
This is a really fantastic product idea, much better than trying to hold things in place with C clamps or other homemade contrivances. Good job!

They look like a fantastic idea. I've got a 1500 98 Valkyrie new to me 6 years ago but having inspected the timing belts they look like new but don't know if they are original or the previous owner, who I knew really looked after it, changed them. With only 25k km on it now, I have been in two minds whether to replace or not. Would really be interested if these were made for the 1500 to make that job so much less stressy. Suspect many others would say the same. Let us know if you can make those too!

I agree what a great idea. Would you mind posting the STL models for those who have 3D printers?

8.1.21. Sweet solution to holding the driven cam belt pulleys! Looks like you have also changed the timing belt tensioner bearings, what bearings did you use and, what size bolts to hold them on the backer plates?

Re: Painless timing belts replacement
This would be the best twelve bucks you would ever spend!
Re: Painless timing belts replacement
This is a great and very well priced product for one that regularly changes timing belts (i.e. a dealer/shop or someone who does a few jobs on the side in addition to their own bike...). However: A single private owner doesn't even have to spend this $21 really.
Just: 1) Well mark and note where you're at in pully line ups (just in case); and, 2) Don't do the job until 1-2 days have past since firing up the bike! Why point #2? Because it's the cylinder pressure in the cylinders which may suddenly move your pullies immediately after taking the belt off! And waiting a day or two will have such pressure totally bleed off so you shouldn't have such concern!!!
Again: JUST IN CASE, still do step #1. But I've always found (the 3-4 times I've changed timing belts) that this makes your tasks far easier.

Re: Painless timing belts replacement
Actually that's wrong. One you remove the belts, the pulleys aren't even connected to the cylinders anymore, so there is no way residual pressure could move them. What moves the pulleys is compressed valve springs pushing against the cam lobes.

Re: Painless timing belts replacement
At 104000 miles I am planning on Timing belt replacement soon. Would those hold downs work on a 1993 1500 GW? Planning a trip to the Great White North soon and would like to do this before then if possible.

Will these work on the 1500 as well?
I sure don’t want to mess things up and have been putting off changing the belts. This seems like a life saver for me.

I used these to do my belts today. OUTSTANDING ! So much better and easier than a handful of vise grips, sockets, etc.

If you're losing pressure in your cylinders, there are bigger fish to fry than timing belts. Valve springs make the pulley move.call-abe wrote: ↑Sun Aug 01, 2021 12:16 pm This is a great and very well priced product for one that regularly changes timing belts (i.e. a dealer/shop or someone who does a few jobs on the side in addition to their own bike...). Re: Painless timing belts replacement
My experience with changing 1500 timing belts is the cams stay put when removing the belts, not like the 4 cyl 'Wings where the right cam wants to go 2 cogs off-time due to valve springs.

As far as I know these wont work on a 1500. Different pulleys, belts, etc. I don't even know if there is a threaded hole near the pulley that can be used to lock the blocks in place.
