WTB: ECU for an '02 GL1800

Post by blupupher »

So my bike just popped the Code 25 FI light, and since it is never the knock sensor (I will swap sides just to verify) looks like I need a new computer.
If you got one, let me know what you want for it shipped to zip 77449.

Man, you get all the problem child GoldWings.
Has your frame been repaired for cracks, or is that the next thing to expect?

Frame recall was done, but no idea if it was cracked and welded or just inspected and was fine.

Funny you say this, because you always hear about these things going hundreds of thousands of miles on basic maintenance, but seems I am getting ones with issues.
At least this one is an easier fix than the 4th gear shift fork issue.
I am really just thinking of buying a new old stock, any used one I get could have this same issue waiting to happen at any time.
On e-bay used ones are $600-650 shipped, I have seen used ones on forums selling for a more reasonable $250 or so. I have found new for $750, and while that would hurt the wallet, a new one should last me a lot longer (and Honda did come out with a new part number for it a few years ago, but no idea if anything was actually improved).

I am also having rear brake issues, and all recalls were done on it as well. I need to do another rear brake bleed (doing the "Rocky" bleed) as well as pulling the rear caliper apart and making sure it is lubed and such.

The ECU is definitely an issue with an FI bike. Mine is the '85 FI model and the ECU for it is scarce and when found commands a good price - used only. To rectify this, doing an OEM ECU Replacement/Upgrade project using the Speeduino Project - similar to the Megasquirt ECU family. Feel your pain with the price and finding one. Have had the new ECU installed and operating the engine, now for some tuning. Imagine you could do this with the 1800 - steep learning curve, but probably a bit more complicated/challenging. Not a lot of spare space for changes.

There is a difference in size between the OEM ECU for my bike and the new Speeduino ECU, old on right - new on left:

Amazing what has happened over time.

Good luck with your decision. Electronics are always a PITA.

Cheers

Well, never mind.
I contacted my insurance about the accident I was in last week and due to the age of the bike and cost of repairs, the bike has been totaled. I am still waiting on a final amount what they are going to pay me for it.

So my search for another bike begins again.

Yeah, that is one way to put it.

For the first time in over 5 years I walk into my garage and there is no motorcycle there, it is weird seeing that. Big huge empty space.

I told my wife this, and she did not think it was weird, till I told her she always sees that spot empty when I am gone on the bike (which is often), but I never see that spot empty unless the bike was in the drive way.

Still waiting to hear from the insurance company, was told they were going to contact me yesterday or today, and today is almost over, so maybe Monday they will let me know and we can begin arguing on how much they will give me.
