1975 GL1000 For Sale (Vancouver BC, CAN area)

Post by rockford »

I am selling my 1975 GL1000. I'm biased, but I think it's a great bike up for grabs.

Some info about it:
I inherited it 15 years ago after someone in my wife's family passed and I was the only motorcyclist for 1,000 miles around in the family. It was a 'barn find' at the time with 22k original miles. Currently has~ 26,000 miles. When I got it, it was not running, and had a Vetter fairing on it and had been painted classic Honda Brown instead of the beautiful blue it came as.

At that time, I did a mild restoration to get it running - kept the Vetter on it, and got it going. Rode it for a few years, but then had kids and life got in the way of any motorcycling so it sat for a few more years.

During the pandemic my son took an interest in fixing it up, so we did a fairly extensive rebuild together. It has had a ton of work done to it - all within the last 500 miles/3 years:

Engine rebuilt from the heads up. Heads fully rebuilt at machine shop.
New custom stainless steel headers made and original mufflers customized to fit with headers. Done by a local Fiat/Lancia mechanic that builds custom exhausts for exotic rebuilds and so they are amazing - even have the 'dent' in them for the stand to fit in.
New timing belts & tensioners, every gasket that could be changed was, new OEM Honda water pump, carbs rebuilt and synced, new ignition wires, coils, and electronic ignition, plugs, brakes completely replaced/rebuilt - calipers, rear hose, a new front/rebuilt rear master cylinder.
Front forks rebuilt with all new fork oil and seals.
Rebuilt the carbs - this is one area I'll profess I'm not an expert at. I bought the cheap kits and that sucked so I bought Randakk's kit, and a float height gauge and did my best. They seem to run pretty good - I have a sync tool and got them synchronized pretty good. It's just cold starts that aren't great - choke is finicky, etc. Once warmed up, it runs amazing and pulls really hard. I now realize my first go-round of mild resto, I wasn't running great!

We reverted it back to 'standard' configuration. Due to the Vetter fairing, I didn't have the OE headlight or turn signals so I go a DOT LED one with integrated signals.
As such, removed the headlight logic module to get the LED's to work. Still have the logic module, and all good parts that came off. Replaced the start/kill switch, rewired anything that needed it including all new Deutsch connectors replacing the brittle plastic ones.

Tires have good tread but are a little older than ideal (8 years or so). Speedo and tach work but have 'patina'. New speedo and tach cables.

Added the luggage you see from a '77 my buddy was parting out. If you want to make it a stock ride, they come off easy. But man are they handy...

Non-stock stuff:
Corbin seat, aftermarket headlight, it has the turn signals off the '77 to go with the luggage. I have the stock tail light/signals still. I have a pretty big box full of spare parts/take-off pieces that will go with it.

It's a really nice bike to ride. But it's almost 50, so it is quirky. My son and I had a blast getting it to here. It's a fantastic candidate for a full OEM resto, or else you can buy it and ride it right now. It's so comfortable to cruise on.

All in all, if you are interested in a GL1000, you'll be hard pressed to find a better one for the mileage, age and money.

$2,000USD OBO
