Need your opinions

Post by halcombrick » Fri Nov 18, 2016 3:07 pm

Well, when it rains it pours! My 82 has 130k and was running like a top. I fuel up and ride home, next day my low beam blows and it's idling up and down,,no biggie I think,,but then trying to go to work today it sounds like gremlins with hammers inside the engine. I think it's done,,what do you guys think? I tried to load a video but cant.

Timing belt slip, stator gone out? Lots of possibilities on this one.
The valve hitting the piston makes a distinctive noise, once you hear it , you will know it.
There is a video on a timing belt slip on this site and the noise associated with it, a little search will find it.
The electrical failure would seem to be connected to the problem. Perhaps the coil is shot? Could be the rectifier, although I doubt it. It could be as simple as a bad main ground connection.
Just throwing some options to check out. Regards, Johnny

Since you just got gas and started acting up--I would dump the gas and put another batch of gas in it.

Maybe you got bad gas or even diesel instead of petro.

Diesel would not affect the electrical problem. Regards, johnny

I think i have found the problem, it's the fuse for the headlight, the holder itself was a little melted when I got it, a quick slide of the fuse and the headlight works ,,high beam anyways. .Low is blown..and bike idles correctly, ,so I'm putting an in line fuse in.

Terrible news brothers..I started a few hrs ago to inspect for a grounding plug wire...unfortunately my oil light began to flicker. I'm afraid after 130k myvmotor has gave up.cIf it was the oil pumpcwouldnt it have licked up instead of just the right rear cylinder knocking at the top? Its over due for an oil change by a lot..and on the side stand.. But that shouldn't trigger oil light should it?

You said it's over due for an oil change but you didn't say if it's low on oil. Low oil level and on the side stand could very well cause the low oil pressure light to come on or flicker.
Gremlins with hammers? When does it make these noises? At idle? When first starting out in first and under load? Does the sound go away ever?
With only 130k on the bike and this actin up all of a sudden after filling the gas tank I would be looking at crud blocking the low speed jets of one or more carbs. Kind of like when you need the carbs synced and it causes primary chain slap. Drain the float bowls into a container and see what comes out. Might just narrow down the problem for you. 8-)

Another thing to check is to make sure that the stator bolt is tight. Unscrew the stator cap, and then you can stick your finger in and feel the bolt. My engine was making a terrible knocking sound and I thought the engine was a gonner. Then I found that this stator bolt was loose......and just tightening it completely took the knocking noise away.

I did a recent prior post on all this. You will have to have the rear tire on the concrete and the bike in gear to put some torque on the stator bolt.

So Rick it's been a week since you asked for help, what have you found out so far? I heard your video on the Facebook group but couldn't respond as I was awaiting approval to join the group. Didn't sound too fatal to me. There's been a lot of good suggestions for you to follow up on, let us know how you are doing. What did the oil pressure measure out at? 8-)
