Thermostat?

All,
I have a 78 GL1000, haven't checked to see if it has a thermostat but I wonder about it. It has been pretty cool (50 to 60F) when I have ridden it, but the temp gauge goes just to the cool edge of the normal range as long as I am moving, when I slow down to 20 or 30 mph it begins to heat up to the normal range, doesn't overheat and the fan works. Does it sound like the thermostat is there or missing, I kind of think it isn't there.

It does sound like the motor is running too cool, which could be a missing or stuck-open thermostat. You say the fan works - does it switch on while the bike is running? If so, the motor must be reaching proper temp, so maybe the sensor or gauge is faulty.

The fan pretty much only comes on sitting in traffic & the temp gauge starts getting near the red zone.
