Oil in water

Looks like I'm getting oil into the water in my 75 GL1000. When I pulled the radiator an checked the water pump connection there was a grey greasy deposit in the pump area an the water was grey. This was fresh water put in a month ago and not ridden, just running in the garage during tuning the carbs and changing over to a single carb conversion. Water had no antifreeze in it. Needing suggestions as to where it might be coming from, head gasket,water pump or whatever?

Water pump is often the source. Since it is mechanical it needs engine oil, and since it pumps coolant it has sealing to separate them. But the shaft seal has been known to desegregate them.

Often what happens is the bearings in the water pump wear out. As they wear, the shaft begins to get more and more free play. The free play wears the opening in the seal larger, and the seal then allows oil or water through.
