engine interchangeability

Post by realetybytes » Sat May 12, 2018 10:56 pm

I have a GL1100 engine from an 81 interstate. I've had it in my 78, so I know it fits from 75 to 81 Interstate frame. Anyone know if it will fit in an 82 aspencade?
Thanks...

Like a glove. I believe 82 was the year they changed coils and igniters? and added a ballast resistor???

I know my 81 uses igniters the 79 didn't have. I'm "familiar" with the setup. Not a mechanic, but once I downloaded the manuals, I've managed to stay on the road. Is the 1200 where the interchangeability ends?

The 1200 is where the interchangeablity gets fun! I have a 1200 in my 77 with 77 heads, cams, carbs. It rips. Considerable shift in torque and hp. The 1200 from 85-87 will drop right into the 1000’s with a few tight fits, but engine mounts are the same. The 84 1200 will fit into 1100’s but 1000’s need a frame mod or rear case swap and different ignition source.

If you have the manuals downloaded it shows the differences in the ignition systems. In the ignition chapter I believe is where the coil differences are noted.

Looks like the copy police are after me . It’s blurry ?? Clicking on the pic brings it in clearer for my phone. The page numbers are visible from the 80-83 manual.
