knocking sound when accelerating

Post by trhaag » Sun Jun 10, 2018 2:50 am

Strange sound when accelerating and high speed - not necessarily knocking, but rrrrrrr sound?

1. I will change oil to a classic motor oil 20/50 and new filter (I have also tried additive in gasoline, no effect)
2. Compression test will be checked and spark plugs.

No powerloss and no strange sound by normal driving.

My questions:
Could it be ignition fault?
Bad gasoline mixture?

Does anybody have experience with other fault equal mine?

Thank you in advance from Denmark.

Trygve

Did this just start suddenly or has it been there all along? Is your air cleaner lid fastened securely?

It could have been there all the time. But I've become aware of it now and it annoys me. I'm also afraid it's not good for the engine. But maybe it's just such a boxer's engine sounds. The engines you listen to on YouTube are not charged.

The air filter has been changed two years ago and the lid is sitting well.

Could the sound come from failure in vacuum, on the left front cylender. I have the suspicion it could be an error.

Anything that causes one cylinder to not fire as strong as the others will make a noise in the intake that sounds sort of like a knock.

I suggest you not use the xx/50 oil, that is too heavy for our bikes, and you are up in the northern climes where the temps don't get high enough to warrant that.

a 10/40 would be better for you. Easier starts, and not overly thick at running temps.

I have a problem that the valves can rattle. So I thought a thicker oil would help with oil pressure. I have changed the packing on valve covers several times and they are still leaking. Hope thicker oil helps. Do you have any other suggestions?

At what speed, rpm, 'grade (up / down hill) & gear does this noise occur?

It's up through all the gear. by hard acceleration. at about 3500 rpm and over. the highway knocks it at speeds over 120 km / h.
If I accelerate gently and it is not uphill so the sound is not as aggressive. no sound down hill here the engine is running clean.

Not sounding like a good prognosis to me, almost sounds, err--reads like a rod knock.

No it's not quite like that. Try to hear here 3.28 min inside the clip. I'm bending and you can hear the engine. Is it a normal sound for a gl 1200?

My'85 doesn't make that noise .... lots of wind noise as well making it hard to hear bike clearly.

Is it louder on one side than the other? Does frequency increase with RPMs? Sounds like maybe valve clatter?

I recall something long ago about noises emanating from rocker cover areas being related to some collar or
spacers being to tight against the rocker arms but mine never made that noise so I've not explored that
avenue.

yes in the left there is more noise. Frikvens does not rise at rpm increase. I have had the valve clatter it did not sound like it.

The last thing you write about exceeding my mechanics skills :D

It was that the distance collar was too close to the rocker and the fix
was to loosen and adjust a bit looser on the shaft as I recall.
