? alternator

Post by GaryRatliff » Mon Jun 18, 2018 5:23 pm

2001 Goldwing abruptly decided not to start. If I put a charger (Halo) on it, it will start but only run for about 30 seconds. I replaced the battery and it still would not start without the charger. With the new battery, charger attached, again it stops after about 30 seconds. When I put a full charge on the battery, the lights work but everything shuts down as soon as I hit the start button. Any thoughts?

Loose battery connection

If you just turn on the key without any jump box or charger attached, do you get anything turning on? Dash, lights, hear the fuel pump run, see the FI light come on for a couple of seconds and turn off? If you turn on the cruise control system, does the orange cruise light come on with the key? Or is everything dead without the charger/jump?

I have to admit ignorance on what gen is what. I have heard all different years Wings called all kinds of different Generations.
Can you possible elaborate as to what generation is what? Thanks.

That is correct Techdude. Nothing at all without the charger attached. I can hear something, I thought of it as a "quite clicking" sound; it probably is the fuel pump. Nothing on the dash without the charge box when I turn the key to the on position. When I turn the key to the "acc" position, the dash menu does come on but only in the acc position.

gen 1 = GL1000 (1975-78)
gen 2 = GL1100 (1970-82)
gen 3 = GL1200 (1983-87)
gen 4 = GL1500 (1988-2000)
gen 5 = GL1800 (1832cc) 2001-17
gen 6 = GL1800 (1833cc) 2018-current

you need to edit the 2nd line

gen 1 = GL1000 (1975-78)
gen 2 = GL1100 (1970-82) <= 1979-1982
gen 3 = GL1200 (1983-87)

Ok, you need to disconnect the cables and check the backside of their connector ends to be sure there’s no corrosion on them where they contact the battery terminals. Then charge the new battery up and try it again without the jump. Make sure the cables are tight on the new battery and not just the bolts/screws.

Ok, did you get a voltmeter yet? You are going to need one to narrow this down. We need to see what the voltage on the battery terminals does before and when you turn on the key, and then after the engine is running. Even if the alternator is dead, the bike will run for much more than 30 seconds on the battery alone.

I finally sucked it up and took it to the mechanic. I will let you know the outcome. I do appreciate the input.
