Some of you know my story, it's a sad one involving 3 lost Goldwings in less than a year! 2 I lost to my garage fire in Oct 2018, an 85 Silver 1200 Interstate and a 99 Black 1500 Aspencade. Fire is a brutal thing! And after the fire I had to have something to ride so I found a 1993 Candy Red 1500A in almost pristine condition for a great deal! Alas, in April of this year a 17 year old pulled his car out of a school driveway into my lane of travel too far and caused an accident on my big Red baby! Here are a few pics of my losses...

Well, the brighter side of the whole deal is the 93 was a "Total loss" according to the insurance company and the buy back was just over $300. to me! The cost to replace the plastics that are damaged would far exceed the cost of the bike for sure, if you could find the parts in candy Spectra Red! So the bike now sports a "Salvage" title, and I've gone over what needs attention, and as it turns out, its not going to be that bad at all! Nothing mechanical was damaged, the bike starts right up and runs as if nothing happened! The Fairing has cracks on both sides, the impact was on the right side and the side shelter cover was broken in a few places, the lower fairing cowl on the right had cracks and the right saddlebag lid is cracked and slightly bent back. Overall, with my plastic welding tools, and some spit and bailing wire (lol) I can fix her to the point that she'll still be a beautiful girl with a lot of life in her and just a few blemishes!








Just a few things that need attention, and I've removed parts that need work, and have decided that while things are off it's time to go through deep internal maintenance like foam filters, lubrication and deep cleaning, and a few upgrades. I picked up the "Unobtainiun 2.0 and 2.1" panels, and a Blaupunkt Toronto radio to get better sound and more features.






Lots to do but this is where I'll post the work done and progress pics.

That's great news you're able to get it fixed back up, and also that you weren't badly hurt! Keep us posted on the progress.

That's the radio mentioned in the Unobtanium 2.1 panel thread, how is the fit on the blanking panel? It looks pretty darn good, what about depth, does it clear the air filter cover ok?

Glad you are OK - bikes can be repaired/replaced
Glad you got to re-own the bike for $300 - that's a good deal
Glad you are fixing it back up - so the Insurance payout should let you put it mostly back together - and it will last you a long time.

Had a slightly similar experience -where someone rear ended me while stationary 1988 GL1500 13000 miles - I got paid out by his insurance company - and kept the bike (cost me nothing) - then I did a few epoxy repairs to the plastic - bike still had plenty of registration. Sold it for a good price (bike was only plastics damaged) - and bought a Valkyrie with the proceeds - win win.

Thanks Stew, I'm on the mend and the bike follows closely!
The radio fits perfectly with no clearance issues at all! I mounted it high on the panel but left enough room above it to mount a "Flip up" radio enclosure because this radio is not a weatherproof or resistant style unit, but it was a bargain at $20 each (I bought 2) and because of the shallow chassis I knew it would fit with no issues of clearance to the air cleaner.






Lots of room underneath!

Much appreciated mate! Yeah the bike is "Plastics only" for repair, but when you have to take as much of the bike apart to make it right, I'd be a slacker if I didn't take full advantage of access! Instrument panel to upgrade to LED's, reflectors to LED lighting, add powerpoints for USB charging both driver and passenger, radiator flush and oil and filter, the works!

REALLY IMPRESSIVE JOB T_BIRDMAN!!!!!

That blank-off panel (Unobtainium 2.1) with the Blaupunkt stereo looks really slick too!!! At $20 a "pop" for that radio, and all the hi-tech features that come with it, , , you're WAY ahead of the curve!! It looks like that panel fits nicely into the center shelter, and it seems to bolt up to the original mounting holes too, , ,win win.

Can't wait to see what gauges you mount into the Unobtainium 2.0 panel (gauge panel) and mount it onto the centershelter as you get your beast put back on the road. After you get 'er done, let me know if the "gauge visor" would help eliminate sun-glare and night reflection off the windshield, , ,I can hook you up with Airtech Fabricators in AZ, or I might have one in stock still.

Hey, thank you Bro! All the time and effort you put into making these panels will make a difference on more bikes than you may realize! As for the gauge panel I have a few ideas but nothing cut in stone yet, possibly a small array of the combo Volt-Amp meter add ons with a USB charger built in, an outside air temp, and a few other things, but that is a bit farther downstream yet.

So the repair/upgrade process is now in full swing! I've taken most of the damaged plastics off and started assessing the extent of repair needed. Most of the damaged plastic is simply in need of realigning the cracked parts back into place and re-bonding them together, then reinforcing them to stay put under the everyday stress of riding.


The impact of the car was primarily on the right side of the bike and the lower fairing cowl took some damage but not too bad. It had only 2 cracks near the hot air vent.


I clamped the piece to bring the cracks closer together and applied a fast fuse super glue to bond them, and when it dried I roughed the area around it and used an ABS hot iron to melt new plastic around it to reinforce it. I didn't take pictures of that piece but after that I did take better documentation pics of the rest of the parts I worked on.


The right side shelter cover got banged in where the air shock controller is mounted, and a few smaller cracks near the lower vents. I tweaked the out of place plastic back into its correct spot, rouhed it up as well and again used the fast fuse glue to set it. Then the same process of hot melting ABS around the cracked areas to strengthen it.




The right side fairing itself took a significant hit and cracked the area of the fairing pocket, cracked into several pieces.










Same process, clean up the areas to be joined, rough them up, glue to set, and reinforce.

A few days into this and I'm jumping around from one area to the next, so I decided to work on the other side corner of the fairing where the left side mirror is mounted. After the initial hit from the car, the bike and I went over on the left side to the ground. The engine guards did their job but the left mirror and fairing corner were broken and the fairing separated.


The damaged corner was still connected and after using my Dremel to clean out all the factory adhesive, I used a 2 part ABS epoxy to put it right, clamped the hell out of it and waited for the 24 hour cure time.






The next day it was set and sturdy as can be! A bit more super glue in a few small cracks and the left side was done for my next task...Speaker hole cutting!

So after seeing that others have cut into their fairing to fit 5.25" speakers, I wanted to as well!


I took the speakers template and taped off the area, traced out the hole and started cutting!


I got the speaker in the hole and test fitted the dashboard housing and found that the attached grill inside was in the way of the new, larger speaker, so I unscrewed it out and cutoff what I still wanted and needed, including the grill.












Lined everything up, glued them in permanently, and now it will fit!

Managed to cut the holes for both speakers and they are fitted in place! I managed to get the U-nuts for the speakers on for the left side, but missed it by 1 on the right side!


I'm waiting for a set of speaker baffles to show up in the mail in the next day or 2, but in the meantime I've run shielded wire to the fairing for the speakers to help cut out any RF noise if possible.

Note: Shortly after posting this Fed Ex showed up with the baffles! Back to work!

Thanks Bro, necessity is the mother of invention, and I love this bike too much to let it go to seed in some salvage yard to be cannibalized for parts! It may have a few flaws that will gnaw at me, but I've got a few of my own flaws that I always hope folks will overlook as well! :D

Update:
I guess I figured wrong! The larger 5.25 speakers will not fit in front of the speaker housing! So, as I saw in other postings, I'll just have to keep cutting til I can get them in and have the dash housing fit over them! After cutting a big enough hole for the speakers to go inside the box, I figured I'd have to fabricate some inside "Tabs" to anchor them once inside!


I used a piece of the "Rudy's ABS patch kit I had on hand and cut it to fit one corner first.


Then the opposite side had fewer anchor points so I cut a 1/16" piece from an ABS sheet I also had on hand, used a heat gun to warm it up to conform to the lower section of the box and fuse it on. When it's bonded well enough, I'll use the heat gun again and fold it back into the box to make the tab line up, what a process!

So while waiting for glue to dry, (Idle hands hit the Devils volleyball!) I thought about the headlight issue that bugged the hell out of me before the accident. I bought the "Pathfinder LED" upgrade and installed them, but was not happy with where I had to put the LED box inside the hole behind the fairing, so....


This spot behind the instrument cluster looked perfect! But the wiring isn't long enough to reach it so...


I opened it up with my Dremel and when the lights go in, the boxes can easily feed up and have a nice shelf area to rest comfortably! I'll put a nice foam padding down to help keep them from vibration.

So after cutting the hole big enough for the LED boxes to fit through, I went ahead and put it all together, both the Pathfinders and the position lights are now LED, PERFECT!




With all the LED upgrades in the housing, time to put it in the fairing.




Those 2 openings on both sides of the hole were like they were made for that purpose! I added some of the cutoff foam baffle leftovers to line the shelf to help save the boxes from vibration if they came loose from the zip ties.




Front lights DONE!

Sorry for the delay, did I mention I'm having a "Mr.Toads wild ride" of a year? Just a few days ago, took my son out for some "Drivers training" in my wife's Honda Civic and my son and I were "T-Boned" in a dark intersection! The wife's car is likely a TOTAL! The garage fire, the 17 year old hitting me on my bike, and now this! CALGON TAKE ME HOME!!! :lol:

Anyway, still trying to fix things on the bike, plastic repair is in progress, stereo upgrade, waiting for certain parts, and looking for the right solution for little details. The TruGel battery that was in the bike was on my tender but just tested it and my battery analyzer says it's bad! :(
Tested the Scorpion AGM battery I pulled out of the garage fire burned 99 GL1500 and it failed too! :(
I also had an unopened Everstart ES50-N18L-A2 lead/acid battery that survived the garage fire that I filled with the battery acid it came with, put it on the tender and VIOLA, it took a charge and tests good! I bought that battery 8 years ago, never filled it, just had it on the shelf in case and the old Walmart back up comes thru!! I swapped out the instrument panel lights for LED while I had the cluster out to do the Fairing repairs, figured as long as it's out, but need a good battery in the bike to test operation and polarities are correct.

I've been taking pictures of the stuff I've done but haven't downloaded them to my puter yet, when I do I'll post them. Some of you might like a few of my fixes, who knows!

Thanks DenverWinger, I did already get the small brush on essential kit from them. I don't have very much touch up to do, except possibly the R-Saddlebag lid that is both cracked and scraped, but I'll try the small areas up front first to see how it works.
