2000 GL1500 SE cruise won't engage

I have a 2000 GL500 SE and my cruise worked well till last weekend. The "Cruise On" light lights up on the dash indicating the cruise system should be working, but when I press the "Set/Decel" switch the "Cruise Set" does not come on the cruise does not engage. I used to have to wiggle the "Set/Decel" button occasionally to get it to engage, but since last weekend, nothing. I replaced the clutch micro switch, which I found looked a bit rough, it clicks perfectly now, but still, no cruise.

Any ideas and suggestions??

When you did the clutch switch, did you look at the clutch rod bushing? Did you test the switch with a meter or just listen for a click?

There are two cruise switches - one that tells when you've just started to pull the lever in, and one that tells when the lever is pulled all the way in.

Does the cruise engage if you push the clutch lever outwards?

Also check to make sure your brake light isn't on (indicating one of the brake switches could be engaged).

Lastly, I'm assuming you are not trying to engage it when in any gear other than 4 or 5? Have you tried both gears?

Hey guys, thank you for responding, and to answer your questions:

A1: No, it does not engage when I push the clutch handle out and my brake lights are not on
A2: Yes, I have tried both gears and no luck.

A3: I did not test with a meter, I heard the click, which sounded a little louder than the one I removed, and I did not look at the clutch rod bushing, but I just ordered the second clutch switch, clutch lever rod, bushing, nut, & brake handle microswitch assembly.

I have difficulty getting down to the foot brake so I will check that one last.

I did watch the video, thank you, and I went out to the bike with a multi-meter (Excel XL8301L), pulled the black/blue & green/white wires, inserted my leads, but was unable to get any readable data from the screen; it displayed a 1. when I set it at the 20k, 2k, and 200 ohm settings, but when I removed the leads from the connectors and touched the leads directly, I got a .001. Additionally, when I pulled on the brake handle when the key is in the "on" position, I heard the microswitch click and I also heard an additional click behind the right-side shelter cover, but not when I depressed the foot brake. Does that mean anything???

Both handles have two switches. Cruise disengage on both sides and a "start okay" (neutral) switch on left and brake light activation on the right side. Usually you can hear both switches click separately.

Plus 1 on the lever bushings. Also if non-original levers, they sometimes are out of tolerance either on pivot hole or the tab that sticks down to activate above switches. I've glued some shims on some of those tabs to make them work correctly.

Hey all, I am a little late in responding, but I want to thank everyone for their input. I decided to replace the two remaining micro switches, as well as the bushing, bolt, and lock nut for the clutch. Since I have aftermarket clutch and brake handles, I ended up putting a very small piece of self-adhesive padding on the paddle of the brake handle, and when I pull the handles I hear multiple clicks now.

Not only that, I literally have to blow on the set button for the cruise to engage and it is now better than ever and responds like it has never responded since I owned the bike.
