2000 SE transmission
2000 SE transmission
Recently out riding and when we stopped at a store.
Came out and bike started fine but when I put into gear had all kinds of noise coming from lower part of engine, grinding and the bike would not move. Finally got it home then called around for somebody that works on 1500 GW's. Explained what we were hearing and was asked to bring it in. So got a MC trailer and went 160 miles. As soon as they heard the noise said probably a shifting fork, maybe a gear and they didn't want to work on it.
Any suggestions what to do now?

Re: 2000 SE transmission
Welcome aboard Don
Well that's a new one as in 1997 Honda upgraded the forks and gears because of earlier tranny failures.
Do you have floorboards and heel/toe shifter on it? The linkage might be loose and needing adjustment.
How long have you had the bike?
Do you keep your foot on the shifter between shifts?
Your location is Ohio?

Hi,
Got the bike in 2002 with 17,000 miles. Now 166,??? on it.
Does have a heel - toe shifter. It is a little loose but not bad. Never leave pressure in it.
Yes live in SE Ohio.
It actually makes a different noise since we trailered it. With the bike running pull clutch in, put it in gear it DIES right then.

Is the side stand down when you tried to put it in gear and the engine dies? If so, that is what it is supposed to do.don4eyes wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 7:34 am Hi,

Re: 2000 SE transmission
It doesn't make any difference. Sitting on the bike, stand up, it still dies.

Re: 2000 SE transmission
Is the noise coming from the transmission area or from the rear drive or driveshaft? Unusual for a transmission to have a problem like that. It is common for the rear drive splines to get worn down to almost stripped if it is not serviced regularly with moly grease and changing the rear drive oil.
Re: 2000 SE transmission
It sounds like it's coming from the alternator area behind the engine.
It is NOT coming from the rear end.

Re: 2000 SE transmission
Sounds to me like a clutch problem. You could very well have a clutch slave cylinder that needs rebuilding. Perhaps even a problem with the clutch discs/plates. Look in the how to section for instructions on the slave. If discs/plates you will have to pull the engine.
The slave cylinders get gunked up after this many years. Common problem with these old girls.

Re: 2000 SE transmission
It's at my sons now. I will look into the slave cylinder, then repost.

Re: 2000 SE transmission
It sounds like maybe the clutch activation suddenly lost the hydraulics. Master? Slave? Brake line? Bleeder? ??
With the bike shut off, put it in first gear, pull in the clutch lever and try to roll it. If no go, there's your problem.

NO. Between my work and my sons, we have not been able to get together. He lives 3 hours away. We might get to look at it this Saturday.
