Help! 1997 GL1500 trouble removing the connector piece for the two exhaust pipes in front of the rear tire.
Hi everyone,
I hope you're all well. I'm moving along nicely on my project, but I've run into a snag... the left rear exhaust pipe is broken where it meets the connector from the manifolds to the exhaust pipes. I've heated it up and loosen it but cannot remove it? Don't want to damage anything, so figured, better to ask the experts.
Will attach pictures...
Any help would be great, it feels like something

Hi there
I've got the same issue on my previous bike
be patient; and put at first some WD40, or equivalent lubricant.
I think it is mandatory to remove one of exaust collector pipe (right one seems to be the easiest one), and you may find some extra job there, as some screws (dowel) might be broken.
Then, try to make it move up & down.
Then, if you are good in welding, try to replace rusty tubes by inox ones, or replace it with chineese tubes or old one in a good shape at the same price, up to you.

Thanks for your reply! I've done both WD40 and a tourch loosen it up.... It's loose, just can't seem to get it off... I'm using a rubber mallet hitting one side the the other.. it moves but will not fall off

I'm interested to know what you will do about the piece you broke off. Lots of rust there and pretty thin. Don't know if it can be welded.

So I found online the part I'm trying to remove, I will attach the picture below, again just want to make sure there are no other bolts other than the ones on either side connecting the maifolds.
With regards to repairs.. the piece actually is in very good condition with only surface rust. welding a new piece of the existing piece will be the qays to go here I'm hoping.

Your best bet is to find a replacement and replace the one on your bike. Trying to weld it is an exercise in futility I'd wager.

I have removed the mufflers but never the exhaust chamber. To remove it would require removing at least one exhaust manifold I believe.

Hey Mike, thanks for your comments. I have loosen it off where both
exhaust manifolds meet the chamber but just won't come off. I was trying not to remove either of the manifolds if possible. There is room for the piece to come off but man it loosens on one side then you hit the chamber on the other side and back and forth.

It is a tough joint to get loose. The chamber outlet joint has a tendency to compress in the center where the muffler clamp has compressed the muffler gasket around the chamber outlet pipe. The outer portion of the chamber joint at the muffler is not compressed. It resembles the shape of an hourglass and that is why the are hard to remove.
If you can destroy the muffler gasket without destroying the chamber outlet pipe or muffler, the will separate.
But it appears in your pictures that you have broken off the chamber outlet pipe where it connects to the muffler. I think your chamber is ready for the scrap bin.

One more thing, one of the exhaust manifolds most certainly needs to be free of the engine and frame to extract that chamber and install a replacement chamber.

the bike came to me with it broken and it appeared to had a unsuccessful weld repair done. I have no clue how it broke off the way it did??.. Ok, well it looks like I'm going to be loosening one of the exhaust manifolds to get this chamber off. I have never removed or loosed one before
. I will keep you guys posted!

At one time there was an aftermarket replacement for that chamber. X something as I recall. The OEM part can be had from Honda, for a price.

LOL, so I saw a used one for $800+ US and another $160+ for shipping
definitely need to be careful not to damage it and I will have a professional welder do the repair. I will be working on it again this Saturday, hopefully will be able to remove it.
