Throttle not automatically returning

Hi. Engine is back in after a 3 year absence lol...

Carbs are in, but on checking the throttle linkage all seems OK.
Cable is free from obstruction but when I open the throttle and release. Its not returning to the shut-off position.
I do seem to remember having a small spring on the throttle cable on the carb linkage, if I'm correct it ain't there any longer. Am I correct in the assumption that the spring is the cause of this??

I too have been struggling with this, and am not sure where to go next. I do not remember a spring like you mentioned. I have already replaced the cable, thinking maybe the original cable had rust inside, but that has not cured it. Huntersbane one thing you can try is to spray some lube down in the cable - I have tried this, and initially it works great, but it only lasts for one ride. Before that first ride is over, it is back to stiff again. Not sure what to think.

At the Carb connection where you connect the grommet at the Longer (out the cable sleeve) end of the cable. I am pretty sure "Originally" there was a small Spring, I know for a fact that this is missing, when I purchased a new cable 3.5 years ago as the original snapped at the carb Grommet end and I lost the grommet, spring and all....LOL
After fitting the new cable, the throttle never automatically shut off, had to shut the throttle by physically pushing it towards the front wheel (obviousley) I think I can remember having a hell of a job with it about 6 or 7 years ago. Trying to wind the spring on the cable, have some Pics somewhere but can't bloody find them either. Its a tiny spring just a tad bigger diameter than the working cable itself... Oh the Joy's of a Winger......

I've never had one apart or even off but isn't there a return spring around the end of the throttle shaft on each carburetor? I know that automotive carbs have one that is wrapped around the throttle shaft behind the round throttle cable hook up. I have had auto carbs off and apart before and this spring will close the throttle with or without the linkage or cable attached.

Yes Russell, you are correct. The throttle returns easily with the cables disconnected. Not so easily if the cable or twist grip are inhibited.

My next thought would be that the cables are incorrectly routed and gives a little resistance causing your trouble. I would check with a friend that has one of these and look at where the cables are routed. I have incorrectly routed cables on other vehicles and equipment where there doesn't seem to be any hard bends but seemed to be binding. When I re routed them properly there was no trouble. Hoping you figure it out and get it corrected.

Is there a diagram that shows the correct routing for the throttle cables? Also, is the adjustment only at the handgrip end, or is it also adjustable at the carb end? If so, how?
