I have never heard of anyone having an oil related problem regardless of what they run.
IF you change it with a new filter every 3-5 thousand miles I would bet any oil would be fine.
I use Rotella Full Synthetic Rated oil with a Super Tech oil filter from Walmart.
I do this because it is EASY and less than $25 for me to do an oil change.
I send my oil out for analysis at Blackstone Labs after each change.. they always say everything looks fine -- keep going..
In fact once after a 6000 mile trip and oil change they said I could go to 8000 miles on the oil if I choose too..
But every 5000 miles works for me because my odometer tells me when to change... 25,000 - 30,000 -35,000 ..etc.
You are correct in the above quote, I also think if you use the correct rated oil and change it often enough, most any oil will work. But I am looking for an extended life for my engine and every thing I can do to add more life to it is a good thing. I do feel it is better to use the newer synthetic oils for the application you have, and are most likely going to help with extended life. With the extended change intervals it almost becomes a non issue with price, as both synthetic and dino oil will be fairly close in overall cost. I have talked to many that always changed oil at 2000 mile intervals, now they are doing 5000 to 7000 miles, when they started using synthetic oils. I don't skimp on oil and filters as that is a small percentage of the cost of replacing an engine or anything else using oil, on a $35,000+ motorcycle.
Anyway keep safe out there and Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Just got an ‘08 with 36K, coming up on 40K and was looking at the Maintence schedule. If I’m reading it right, oil & filter change are due every 8K with dino oil. Why are you guys changing your synthetic oil every 3-6K? Am I missing something?

Where are you looking the Amsoil?

TIA

No, you are not missing anything. Just some people like to change their oil before it is due on the maintenance schedule because it makes them feel good, or it is easier to remember at say 5K miles. I run Rotella T6 synthetic for 8K miles or one year, what ever comes first. No problems and shifts are great. Close to 60k on the bike.

Because this ---

Amsoil is great oil - but do you really need to spend that kind of money?

Rotella T6 (Wal*mart) with a new OEM filter is under $30 when I change it myself (which I do) --
And it works just fine -- over 160,000 miles on my previous GL1500 and now for 65,000+ on my GL1800 --
