Foot warmer cable

Post by yogi57 » Sat Apr 07, 2012 7:12 am

Hello everyone, just replaced my air filter on my 06 Wing. I would not have attempt it without this forum. Thanks for that.
Everything went well except when I finished, my foot warmer cable was not functioning. I removed the front lower cowl, inspected the cable where it joins to right and left side. I'm baffled, how are these cables suppose to be connected? I'm missing something. The cable did function properly prior to my air filter change. Can anyone clue me in on want is wrong? Is there a schematic or a how to out there? Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Take your left pocket out and see if the cable is still attached to the handle that operates it on the top shelter. Ive seen where sometimes if its not put in properly it will come off or sometimes owners forget about attaching the cable.

I double check already, that is not the case. The problem is where the three cable join.
Thanks

Remove the left-hand box under the steering wheel, check the cable and installed an armor on the lever to open the heating!

Okay, here is a weirdee. This happened to me this spring, with the heater doors open - the open/close selector would not close the vents. Being as they were open, I manually pushed them closed, after which the open/close selector began to operate correctly. Without doing anything else, the doors opened and closed as they should. If any of this is similar to what is going on with yours, then the same thing may get it working again. If not, then, at least it is worth a try.

Thank you for your responses. I went to my local dealer to inquire about my problem. All he could tell me is that the cable is broken,
replacement cost for the cable is over $100.00 and in one complete unit. This is what I did to fix it.
1- slack both right and left cables at adjustment points
wire the three cables together
2- glue it all together using glue gun (photo below)
3- reassemble everything as normal
4- adjust both right and left side cables
Everything is working perfectly again. I would have included more photos but I can only upload one. I hope this will be of help to anyone encountering the same problem.

An answer to this problem for later use. There is a white plastic piece inside the tube with two grooves on it. Two cables should be placed into these grooves. Using a wire pull this white plastic out and place the two cables on it. This will join the cables.

Good afternoon all,

An old thread to be sure, but I seem to have a similar problem. My dilemma is, how do you open the junction tube where the three cables connect? Is there any special way to open it? If you've done it before, how did you do it without breaking anything?

When I work the lever to the left/right, the heater doors don't open or close. They are in the closed position at the moment. I've pulled the left cubby to check the connection of the cable and the lever, and the cable is clipped in the bracket as well. I've played with the cable adjusters and verified the cables are attached to the respective doors. One thing I've noticed is that when I work the lever, I feel no tension or resistance; as if the cable is not connected somehwere. This is why I susbect the problem is where the three cables connect. I just need to know how to get inside without breaking anything.

Thanks for any help and insight anyone can provide.

Jim

New cable $50 at Bikebandit....Be sure to route it EXACTLY as the service manual shows. EZ!

I'd like to save that option as a last resort but thanks. I may order the cable just to have on hand though.

Could you open the junction tube? It was quite easy to open, a rubber cap and a tube if I remember correctly.

The last time I tried to open the "capsule" I used only my hands and it felt quite tight. I did not attempt using any tools. Any insight would be helpful and appreciated.

I assume I should put as much slack in the cables as possible and then what? What tools, if any should I use? Twist and pull apart? Sorry, I'm just at a loss on this one. I may wait until after the holidays to try again as it's pretty busy. When I get back into it, I'll try to remember to take some photos.

Thanks

Jim

To remove and install the cable to the lever assembly, in all most all castes, I use a small 90 deg pick.

I wouldn't even waist my time with that. Repairing that cable is about the same as trying to glue plastic. The correct, long lasting, reliable repair is to replace the cable assembly.

Ya know Greg, I think you're right. I'm going to order the cable just to have it on hand when I get around to opening it back up. If by chance I am able to open the capsule without damaging it, I'll try to report back with some details. It'll be awhile though, busy time of year!

Thanks,

Jim
