How do I restore a seat?

Post by harkgold » Sat May 26, 2012 12:52 am

I've been doing a ton of research on line about how to clean and restore the seat on my '84 GL1200 Interstate.
As a result, my head is spinning so I thought I would go to the best source and ask the folks that have already been around the block a few times regarding this issue.

The seat is structurally sound but it is just filthy dirty from sitting in a farm shed for nearly seven years.

It is an expensive leather after-market seat and I just need some advice on how to properly clean and dye if necessary, and generally refurbish the seat to look new again.

Can anyone give me some advice regarding this process? Based on what I have read there are many products and processes, but few that really do a good job.

Thanks,

Harkgold :?:

Try using some saddle soap to clean and soften the leather. I'd wash down the seat with some Simply Green and then after it drys give a good rub down with the saddle soap ( apply with a dampened cloth ) then buff with a dry cloth. I think you'll like the results.

I agree, I've never had anything but good results using saddle soap on leather seats.

D2D, your bike picture reminds me of my first Goldwing, I purchased in 1980. A 1977 1000 that when I sold it to go to Germany had over 97,000 miles on it. The only real problem I ever had with it, was replacing the valve stem seals and on my trip to Seattle from San Antonio, I had the bike die before I actually left SA. What I discovered along side the road across from a Home Depot was the battery vent tube was not on the bike and the acid vented out and dripped on the battery cable and rotted it into. I walked across the street and bought wire, connectors and new vent tube, fixed it and continued to Seattle and back.
