Buying a GL 1500

Post by dodi » Sun Oct 04, 2015 10:15 pm

Posted this on the GL 1500 wondering if there are any opinions from the GL 1200 site .
I have owned my Goldwing 1200 for the past 6 months and have really enjoyed it...i have owned several bikes in the past both Sportbikes and Cruisers....Standards...etc...and BMW's, Harleys etc....i thought in my wildest dreams that i would ever own a Goldwing only becuse of the size of the bike. ( I am only 5'4" tall with a short inseam of 27 inches). Many of the bikes i have owned have been lowered. Anyways to the point..... my GL 1200 sits pretty low with the seat cut down a bit and with the adjustable air suspension dialled down. I recently have started noticing the GL 1500's and really like the look and the fact they are a lot newer. My 1200 is a 1985 and i am interested in the 95 and newer 1500's mainly because of the lower seat. I would be buying at least a 10 year newer bike with the 6 cyclinder and reverse. I have never ridden a 1500 but a few people i have talked to have encouraged me to stay away because the 1500 is much bulkier and heavier and is too much bike for me. I have heard this story before. I understand that the bike is heavier but with a low seat height and a cut down seat would the 1500 be a viable option...i mean if my bike weighs almost 750 pds's an Aspencade and the 1500 is 800pds plus it really shouldn't be unrealistic to ride the 1500. Both bikes are so heavy that once they get past thebalance point of no return you can't save them anyway. i have also been told the 1500 is nicely balanced , more modern and in some ways easier to handle because of the improved suspension, brakes etc....Bottom line if i can ride a 1200 can i ride a 1500.
P.S. I have not dropped my 1200 and have mainly ridden in busy stop and go traffic without incident...Also had the wife on the back for a short tour of the city....Any advice would be appreciated ....what do you guys think....thanks in advance for any input.

It sounds to me like you have a really good grasp on the differences between the bikes. I went from a 1100 to a 1500. The 1100 actually felt "heavier" because there was so much more weight higher up - although it actually weighed less. The 1500 felt at first to me like a truck (which is what I said about the 1100 when I first got it), but its mass is so low, it is very manageable. I have no problem flicking my 1500 around.

In terms of comfort, particularly for long distances, there is no comparison to the GL1500.
