Need a part for a 1971 Honda CL450
Hi all.
I'm near the end of a year long restoration of a 1971 Honda CL450. It was modified so it looks like a little chopper with a long front end and pull back handle bars.
Any hoo...it's up and running but I need a part for the electric starter, starting clutch. I'll try to attach a parts picture (it's the large sprocket, item 2).
I have been looking for weeks and the only one I can find (on Eek-Bay) goes for $125 (used) which is more than I paid for the bike.
Can anyone help me find this part, please. Anyone got a dead CL or CB450 in their backyard??? The same part can come from a 1969 to 1975 bike.
Don't really expect results here, but you never know unless you ask.
(yes, the bike has a kick started which works fine, but I'm still mending from 4 broken ribs and kick starting kinda hurts.
Thanks to all.
Dennis

Is the part unique to the cl450? The reason I ask is I have several dead cb350f.
Part number may also be helpful.

Re: Need a part for a 1971 Honda CL450
Thanks for the quick response.
I don't have a part number because I can't find one listed in the various bike parts listings I find. I think that's because the part is no longer carried or can be back ordered.
The gear reduction part you found is actually a piece in the transmission, but thanks for checking.
I do have some dimensions for the part, which are (each dimension is a diameter):
94.40 mm (3.72 in) overall tooth diameter
41.41 mm (1.64 in) bearing face
21.00 mm (.825 in) inside dia of shaft hole
Here is a link of the part on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-68-74-CB4 ... ~t&vxp=mtr
I've seen pictures of the same part for 350's and they look the same, but I haven't been able to get dimensions for the part. Nor have I been able to see the back side of the 350 part to see if it is the same as the 450 part.
Thanks for you help.

Hi. Not even close, but thanks a lot for checking on it for me. Appreciate it.
Guess I'll have to keep using the kick starter until I can find a replacement.
Oh well...

Re: Need a part for a 1971 Honda CL450
I did very little research but I did find what I believe you are looking for. The problem is, it is no longer available.
It was at this website https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cl450_model196/ that I found these pictures: and this mechanical schematic: The Honda part number is: 28110-292-000
You can do a computer search for the part and get several hits but none seem to be available.
You can always go to the site listed above and ask that they notify you if the part comes available or do a search of motorcycle reclamation yards.

Re: Need a part for a 1971 Honda CL450
Thanks MikeB.
You came across the same problem I've had for the last couple of months. The part is out of order in all the part houses I've come across and the part you found on ebay is indeed the part I need, but it's used and going for a new-part price. I notice that the seller has dropped his price from $125 to $80. Maybe if I wait long enough it will come down some more.
Meanwhile, I'll keep looking.
Thanks again.

Re: Need a part for a 1971 Honda CL450
Perhaps you can make that person an offer.
As to price, it is only worth what someone will pay for it. What are you willing to pay to get a part that had been up to now unobtainable? That is a decision only you can make.
Good luck in your search.

Your CB450 looks like it would be worth $250 or more.

Hi.
Just wanted to close out this post. The part I needed finally showed up on EEK!bay and even though it was for a '72 instead of a '71 it was the same part and fit perfectly. Cost less than 30 bucks including shipping and was in excellent shape.
Good things come to those who wait.
Now looking for a starter...
