balancing beads in tubed tire?

Post by spoiledsaskhunter » Sat Apr 21, 2018 8:59 am

i've read some threads here about using balancing beads, but no one has mentioned whether or not they will work inside of a tube.

what say you?? has anyone tried putting balancing beads inside a tube tire?

Yes, they do work in tubes. They state that they will, and I have used them inside tubed tires, they work exactly the same and just as well.

thank u for taking the time to reply.........i've been reading a VERY long winded thread about beads since posting, and finally found reference to beads in tubes. they felt, as you do, that beads in tubes would be fine. i'm gonna try them, as it's an hour to a shop that will balance my new tire, and only 2 minutes to the tire shop for beads!

I've had some of these balancing beads in the
garage for over a year now, but was scared of
trying them since I heard they can stick to the
'goo' used to mount new tires, and actually make
the balance WORSE. If they stick to the 'goo' and
clump up, is that an issue ?? Wingadmin - I'll
take your word for gospel on this......

If there is so much mounting goo that it's clumped inside, then yes, it could cause exactly what you're describing.

What I normally do is put the "goo" only on the edge of the rim, where I show in red here:

Goo on rim
Goo on rim

Then I will put the goo on the actual tire bead surface. In both cases, I put very little of it on. That way the tire scrapes the "goo" off the rim as it is forced in place, leaving the inside of the rim pretty much clean.

I've thought about spraying some silicone lube on there, waiting for it to dry, and then mounting the tire, but I always worry about the lubricant allowing the tire to slide on the rim under heavy braking, so I've never done it.

Wingadmin - once again thanks for your always
prompt reply. I didn't mount my own tire, so have
no idea how much goo they used. (My local shop
wont even TOUCH my bike - its over 20 years old).
I had to take my wheel off and drop it off for them
to change the tire. Yeah, sucks. I hope auto shops
don't get this plucky in the future.

Spoiledsaskhunter - Exactly what I was thinking .
Inside the tube there would be NO goop.....

not a derail leakyroof, but when I asked about my stealership doing the carbs on my gl1000, the guy got a hazy look in his eye and said, 'we don't touch that old ****'........money must be coming in too easy, or they don't have the knowledge to do the job.
