Bouncy bouncy

Post by alwrmcusn » Tue May 01, 2018 12:42 pm

I have a Harbor Freight Tag-A-Long trailer. I have only used it once for an extended weekend trip. I am about to do another longer trip. It pulls very easy, tracks great and does not seem to affect my gas mileage very much. It does however bounce over even small imperfections. Would removing one of the leaf spring leafs be effective in reducing that bounce? It is not heavily loaded Probably less than 100 pounds of cargo at most.

Definitely.

I pulled the extra leaves out, and only use the main spring... which is still too strong for what we haul.

Then the tire pressure makes a big difference, I found that 20 lbs is "just right".

I am using 5.80 x 8 tires and wheels which are almost an inch wider/thicker than the OEM HF 4.80 tire/wheel.

the 5.80 is a bit stronger, and the tread wears better.

I lengthened the tongue the length of a Swivel Hitch adapter, that improved the trailer ride a bit more.
This was a bolt on, no weld adapter.

I probably should have mentioned, I installed the Harbor Freight 12inch wheels tires. I have been using 45 pounds in the trailer, I'll try 20. I'll have to wait until we return to do the spring leaf mod. Thank you for your info.

Also make sure that the drawbar is 1.5 times the axle width.
