Well, as the title says, my bike is in the shop. Last Sunday the wife and I where returning from a ride to Tulsa, when about 15 miles from home, the bike lost all ability to put power to the ground. The motor would rev, but no matter what gear it was in, all I got was a clatter from below my butt. I coasted to a safe place to stop/park, checked it over and saw no obviously busted parts, so I called for a tow truck to get us home.
Upon getting the bike home, I checked it over better, pushed it around some, and from what I saw, felt, and heard, I am fairly sure I lost a u-joint. Pushing the bike forward, in gear, got me a rhythmic click click click, about one click every 3 feet I moved forward. So the shop is gonna tear into her yesterday afternoon and this morning and call with what they find so I can decide how to proceed from there.
The owner has told me he has a good used u-joint for $50, or a new one will be about $180. I don’t know what to do there as we did a used u-joint last year, and I got about 15K out of it. ..so do I risk it again or go with the new one?
I am also getting a new rear tire done as this one, a E4, has cord showing ! I guess I have been slipping on my TCLOCK some, opps !
Anyway, that’s what’s up here, once I know for sure what is wrong with the bike, I will share that info too, maybe even with pictures, if I can get them.

If it were me, I'd have a new U-joint installed. The extra $130 is a small price to pay for the knowledge that it will likely go 100K+ miles, and you've already had experience with a used one that only went 15K miles. The labor of having this job done again would easily have paid for the cost of a new one last time, and you likely wouldn't have to be doing it again this time...

Plus, there's the towing costs to be considered.

Just my $.02' worth...

Well, it turned out my thought was wrong, it was not the U-Joint, but was the drive splines . . . They where SHOT ! :o

Can you spot the bad parts and the “new” parts ? I did go used on the parts, but they are in very good shape compaired to what was there. . .

Wow. How many miles were on the old parts? Do you know about how often the failed parts had been serviced?

The bike has 155K miles on it, 80k of those by me. It got moly grease every tire change (average about 18-20 on a rear tire) and did no show much in the way of wear prior to this . . . Last tire was at 130K .

It is getting moly this time too.

That was all taken apart 15k miles ago to do the u-joint. The moly did not wear out in that short of a time. :?

That was all taken apart 15k miles ago to do the u-joint. The moly did not wear out in that short of a time. :?

Yeah, the owner and I talked about that, he pointed out that was done by the old mechanic, who was fired for not doing some steps to various jobs. . .

I've gotta tell ya. When I had mine apart, I could have reassembled it without cleaning and adding any Moly, and it would have had 10 times the grease that yours is showing. It looks to me like that joint was cleaned, and hadn't had grease reapplied for a LONG while. You might want to hang around the shop while it's being reassembled to verify correct greasing and reassembly.

John, I wonder what the splines on the drive shaft and where it mates to the final drive look like???

Well, had anew development come up. They got the bike altogether with a good uses driveshaft and the drivesplines, and it turns out there are TWO length drive shafts available. The used one they had turned out to be the short version, so they had to tear it down and reuse my drive shaft( which is in good shape) and put it all back together.
I did see the spline set, and it was/ is greases up nicely, so all good there.

I don't know if it makes a difference. That grease appears to have a "clear" nature to it. It does not appear to be the Honda Moly grease that everyone talks about. I have it, and have used it. It is a very opaque dark grey to black color grease. It has been discussed a lot on these pages. Maybe that is another brand Moly grease, but I have my doubts. Not just any grease is supposed to be adequate for the job. Just an observation.

That is not molylube, just a regular grease which is not suitable for splines.

What product (as a reference) is good?
Molybdene disulfide xx? Or does Honda have something available?

In the factory Honda service manual it says for the splines use "Moly 60 paste" but I remember reading recently that someone said Honda had a newer equivalent 70-something paste that replaced the 60.

Others have already said it, but as soon as I saw that picture I thought the same thing: That's not Moly. It will have little to no effect on lubricating your splines. Clean off all trace of the grease currently smeared all over it and apply the proper high-Moly paste instead.

Good catch guys. Your shop, @UncleFester, is not using the correct grease. I think this happens a lot, even in a dealership. Here's a picture from the help section of what the Moly grease looks like.

Moly grease is the best for this application. Not nessarly "Honda" moly. Any grease would have worked better than what was on there (no grease!)

I worked four years in a Bmw shop and dry/no greased splines were an all to common problem. A drive train can be trashed in as little as 50k if not lubed properly.

I try to do all my maint on my bike just to make sure things are done right. I've had conversations with my local dealership on the proper way of doing things. I've had to point things out in the service manual that weren't getting done properly.

I worked for a bike shop in Columbus that started out only servicing bikes (cycle therapy). We had lots more work because of the shops around us shoddy work.

I'm pretty certain you could use the Locktite version. The MSDS specs the Moly content at 60-100%, with minimum being 60%, same as the old Honda version. For about $30 on Amazon, you can get 8oz. that would probably last you, your kids, and grandkids a lifetime.

I did get some Moly Paste, on my own dime, and will be using it from now on, unfortunately they had the bike all reassembled by the time I got the moly paste, so it will have to wait to be use until I can remove the rear wheel and regrets it, might be as long as mid july and less than 10K miles before it WILL be done. They said they have used that particular grease they use for like 25 plus years with no issues, but why take the chance, right ? Anyway, the repair was done, and is running great now

I used to clean and re lube the drive splines on my old 1200 every 20K or so. Hated that job! And for years I only replaced the large O ring going around the gear that slippes into the rear diff. But there is another one on the back side on the gear assembly that slides onto the wheel. That one eventually wore out and caused the wheel gear to misalign and caused the gear in the rear diff to get chewed up...$1200 repair bill. Yikes :( ...So change both at the same time...

When the 1800's were first released. The first question I asked my dealer was if Honda had improved the rear spline set up.
