Oil leak...But where??

Post by offcenter » Fri May 11, 2018 1:01 pm

On my '99 1500SE, 85,000 miles....
All around the alternator is wet with oil.
Oils drops are dripping from the spring on the sidestand when I park the bike.
It's not the shifter shaft. I replaced the seal and installed the support last
year. That area is dry now.
I thought maybe a head gasket, but that area seems dry also.
Before I start taking it apart, anyone have a good guess as
to where the oil would be leaking from on the left side
of the bike, near or around the alternator?
I hate exploratory surgery.
Thanks guys.

If it is leaking where the alternator mounts there is an o-ring, if it is leaking through the alternator there is a seal in the end. Should be easy to see.

Ok, Thanks Dave.
I'll put that on my list for my next service.
I wanted to pull the alternator and replace the
rubber cush-drive pads anyway.
I'll order the O ring and seal. Thanks.

If you see an oily spot, spray it clean with brake cleaner to remove all oil and grime. Then dust some talcum powder in the area. The instant oil begins to leak, it will be instantly obvious as to where the leak is originating.
