Searching for a Headlight Replacement

Post by Afterphil » Sun Jun 03, 2018 9:41 am

Good Morning everyone. As I'm new here allow me to introduce myself and my bike.
I recently purchased my first motorcycle; a 1981 Gl1100 Interstate with 36055 Miles for $350.
The bike had been sitting in storage in a garage for 18 years and is in great condition.
I've been doing all the required maintenance to get her running and I'm about ready to put
the final touches in place. I've decided to go with a "Naked Goldwing" look since I don't intend
to make long interstate rides. That being the case, I need to find a good set of mirrors and a headlight
that I can attach without the fairing in place. I'm hoping I can get some good recommendations from the
experts here. I've used a lot of the DIY articles in the forums for my restoration and I want to thank everyone
for posting such detailed guides. I hope to be able to add valuable information as I become more familiar with
my Wing.

Regards and thanks,
Phillip

The original Honda headlight buckets are pretty much made of that rare metal "Unobtanium", but I bet you could shop the aftermarket Harley parts and find something you could make work....
They say 98% of all Hardleys ever made are still on the road..... The other 2% made it home.
(I stole this from somebody on another GW site...)

Thanks a lot! I didn’t know they would be compatible. Any suggestions on mirrors?

Didn't really say they'd be "compatible" either, you'd probably have to do some adapting to make work.

As to the mirrors, standard 1100 mirrors just thread into the clutch and brake units on the handlebars, the threads are pretty universal between bike MFR's, so you can thread in any mirrors you like...

I’m all about improvising and adapting.

Just did an install on my 83 Aspencade and used a headlight assembly made or dist by Bikemaster and sold by Fortnine in Canada. It is available elsewhere. Bikemaster has a webpage and answered my inquiries in a timely manner. The headlight is chromed metal, has a glass lens and come with a decent bulb. The headlight appears to be a knockoff of the ones use on gl1100's CB900's etc. I am very pleased with the purchase. You will need headlight bucket mounting ears. I bought mine off ebay used from a used.mc parts dealer
in Oregon. Not cheap but am very happy that I used those rather than generic mounts. Just a heads up make sure that some dufus hasn't sawed the turnsignal mounting tabs off the ears. Had to fabricate tabs for mine. Bikemaster also sell front turnsignals which are a replica of the ones originally on the gl1100 standard and I bought those from Fortnine as well. Looks great IMHO. The links for the ones I purchased are at:
https://fortnine.ca/en/bikemaster-7-sli ... -headlight
and
https://fortnine.ca/en/bikemaster-turn-signal-25-1095

I have no connection to Bikemaster or Fortnine, check them out if you are going for an original look

I know it needs to be said, so I 'll say it...after sitting for 18 years, don't even think of starting that engine until you have changed the timing belts (unless you have already).

I had already started it and let it idle for a long time before seeing this. Timing belts have been added to the list of things to change now, though.

I like the way that looks. I’ll get one ordered. I have another plan for the turn signals, so mounting ears aren’t a problem.

I reused the headlight bucket and all out of my vetter fairing when I ditched it. The original mounting ears were underneath the fairing. Worked out great!
