Michigan Road Trip - June/ Suggestions?

Post by wellman » Thu Jun 07, 2018 8:49 pm

Hello,
Live in SW VA and my Dad (2007 Honda Aero 750), myself and my wife (2000 GL1500 SE) are leaving on a trip at the end of this month. Tentative plan is to head up thru WV, OH and IN then to west coast of Michigan. Up the west coast thru tunnel of trees, cross Mackinaw Bridge then head into Canada, From there go across southern Quebec to Niagra Falls then back home thru PA. 7 days/ 2200 miles. Anyone have any suggestions for things to see in MI? Living in my area we have so many mountain roads I don't want to be disappointed. I know MI does not have mountains but looking some good rides or things to see in the area we are going thru. Anyone needs info for my area I will be glad to help.
Thanks!

BT,
Sounds like a fun time but we are leaving VA on June 22 so the dates aren't going to work for me. Looks like that trip is mid-July.
Thanks for the invite!

You will be very likely travelling west across the top of Toronto, on the 401. I'd highly recommend scheduling your trip so that you do this either right in the middle of the day, or in the evening - after 7 pm. You will otherwise be stuck in the massive traffic jam that develops every day, 7 days a week in the mornings and afternoons. As it is, if there is an accident (which happens frequently), you can be stuck in a traffic jam any time of day or night.

I used to commute across this miserable road, and have spent 2 1/2 hours travelling 20 miles in stop and go traffic. Doing it on a bike, in the heat, would be awful.

You can try taking the 407 ETR toll road (parallel to the 401, and farther north) but expect a massive bill in the mail - travelling across Toronto to the QEW the 90 miles or so on the 407 instead of the 401 during the day will net you a toll bill of around $65.

My plan was to come down 400 from Sudbury and try to skirt around Toronto. Think I will change the plan. Should I go west somewhere off of 400, head south toward Brantford then 403 to Niagara?

My suggestion would to be abandon the 400 at Highway 89, take it west to Highway 10, then take Highway 10 south.

If time is more of an issue, take Highway 10 south through Brampton and into Mississauga, where you can either get on the 407 to the 403, or take 10 all the way to the 403, which will take you to Niagara Falls.

If you're more interested in spectacular scenery and riding roads, then get off Highway 10 at 24, and take 24/124 west through Belfountain (some of the best riding roads in Southern Ontario) and Erin, until you hit 125/25, which will take you south all the way to the 403.

Great suggestions. We will do that.
As usual, never disappointed when asking advice on this site.
As a side note, my dad is 78 years old and is super exited about this trip. He is going out everyday riding 200-250 miles to get ready.

Thanks!!!

I don't know the roads in lower michigan, but I do know the UP has some local foods worth looking for near or below the bridge. Potato sausage and cudighi might be hard to find where you will be, but a pasty can be found near the bridge and other random places below the bridge. A quick search on google will point you in the right direction.

Stop by and see the Sleeping Bear sand dunes. Biggest sand box in the Midwest. Don't pass by all the fudge shops near Mackinaw. Stop by and satisfy your sweet tooth. Traverse City has some nice craft beers as does Elk Rapids and Petosky. All are on US 31 on the way to the Tunnel of Trees.

Thanks Guys! Good information.
Jim, Really appreciate the pics as well. M22 is on my list, looked like a nice quiet road.
We leave Friday, most likely in the rain. Ughh!

UP Michigan has had some drastic flooding. You may want to check that out before you firm up your route.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey
