Noisy alternator

Post by Fuzzyswing » Tue Jun 12, 2018 5:09 am

I installed a new 90 amp alternator on my 1988 gl1500 also new rubber dampers. Now when I start it when engine is cold it makes a nocking sound. After the engine is warmed up all is quiet. Has anyone else ran into this issue? Thank You

Is the knocking sound coming from the alternator?

How is the oil in the engine?

Yes the nocking sound is coming from the alternator. I put my stock alternator back on and no noise.
I'm thinking the higher amp alternator is able to put out more current at idle and it's the backlash making the sound.

The alternator should not be knocking, regardless. There shouldn't be backlash or free play, it should just spin smoothly on its bearings. You might want to take it up with the seller or manufacturer of the alternator.
