Neutral Light does not work.

Post by windchaser » Tue Jul 03, 2018 3:35 pm

I recently purchased an 88 Goldwing GL1500, I have two questions I am hoping one of the riders in this group can answer.

1.When I put the bike away in the fall of 2017 the neutral light worked. It doesn't now, the bike will start if I pull the clutch lever, and reverse will work if you pull the clutch lever to start it.
2. The bike will idle if the side stand is up and in neutral as soon as you put the side stand down the bike dies, and will not restart with the side stand down.

The second question concerns low end stumble, if you play with the choke lever you can find a spot where the bike idles about 500 and will take gas right of the bottom, but if you turn the choke off completely, the bike idles at 750 and stumbles when you give it gas.

Advice on correctly these problems would be helpful.

I'll address the neutral lamp first.
My88 is poor at lighting up the neutral lamp..It's the switch...
I can get it to light most of the time if I switch from first to neutral but rarely from second to neutral.
You may try cycling back and forth between these two gears...effectively moving the switch to see if it may start working.
As far as the side stand..The bike "thinks"that your in gear...No neutral signal(light) and is killing the ignition.
This is by safety design.
If your low end stumble wasn't a problem before, you may need to run a few doses (tanks) of Sea foam) to help clear the slow speed jets.

The light is annoying but I can ride the bike, the stumble has a been a problem from day one.

I have spoken with Wing riders in my area that tell me it's just the way the 1500s were, I am not buying that, there has to be a way to adjust the timing or the carbs to make the bike run properly, the plugs are new fuel is new, system cleaned with Yamaha Ring Free.

I have checked the manual and so far I have come up with nothing that says what to do.

I have been riding many years so I can find neutral without a light, it would just be nice to have things work correctly.

Does the OD light and the cruise control work? There is/was a different timing wheel to put on the front of the crankshaft to advance the timing a few degrees to take care of that stumble in the 88-89 models, don't know where to get one.

You can get the timing trigger wheel at Cyclemax.

Yes the OD light does work, I have not tried the cruise control yet.

I will look into the trigger wheel, thanks for all the advice.

Some have had some improvement using the trigger wheel replacement.
I found on my 88 that the accelerator pump didn't work very well at all.Had to replace the diaphragm and "O" rings on the coupler tube.I also lifted the slides 3mm.

OK, I was thinking the connector on top of the right fan might be disconnected but your problem could still be in that connector.

If you want to verify that the switch is bad...turn on the key and short the light green/red wire to ground at the plug. This should light up the neutral lamp.
I disassembled my switch...A real pain...almost ruined it too..
The wiper was worn and the landing pad seemed too small.I just cleaned it up...not much to fix in there...Easier to just replace it.

I think I have found the problem, it appears the switch on the reverse lever is bad, if you move the lever you can get things to work.

I want to thank you all for your suggestions, and directing me where to look.

Thanks

Yup, those switches do wear out. They're such a common failure item that Cyclemax keeps them in stock. Mine went out a couple years ago.
