starter chain

This might sound stupid but I removes the starter from my 1982 Aspencade today and when I went to put it back on, the little gear on the starter chain was off the chain, I could take it right out of the starter hole. is this normal and does it just slip back on?

What I just realised is this is the gear on the end of the starter. Does this just slip back in place?
