On my way back from Knoxville last Saturday I started to experience the same symptoms you have described on my '01 GW.

On my back from Wing Ding in Billings, MT a couple of years ago after a 6000 mile west coast trip the FI light came on just as I pulled into my driveway. I checked the code....and as other '01-'05 owners have experienced, thought I had a bad O2 sensor. Did the sensor swap and still got the FI light. I had read/researched another forum and found others working through the same issue. Most all ended up replacing the ECM. I replaced both 02 sensors and installed a new right handlebar switch assembly. Hadn't had a FI light come on since...until last Saturday. So... two years and about 5000 miles later here I am dealing with the same issue again.

The overall permanent solution others found was replacing the ECM which is what I plan to do.

Just found this forum today! Glad to have found another source of GW related topics.

This ECM swap is usually associated with a knock sensor code, not an O2 sensor code. There was a service bulletin years ago for the O2 sensors and their wiring harness. What code is yours throwing now?

Yep, that’s a knock sensor code and with it running badly, it’s most likely the ECM. Bad knock sensors and even bad knock sensor wires won’t make it run bad.

Techdude - I think in all the research I've done I managed to get confussed a bit. Somehow I guess I thought the knock sensor and the 02 sensor was the same thing. Please confirm the correct part number the '01 ECM. I want to get that ordered right away.

Also... nice to see you and Greg on this forum too. Didnt post much but read a lot on the other forum.... you guys are so knowledgable. Greg helped me with a water pump issue about three years ago. I sure thank you for your help on this issue.

Thanks and you’re welcome. Here is the original part number for the 2001 ECM #38770-MCA-671. It will likely be subbed to the current number, which who knows what that might be today.

any of the ECMs from 2001 to 2005 will work.

I put a 2004 ECM in my 2002 and it runs like new.

Dang it!! Here I am again. Got just under a thousand miles since repair and while out riding today it happened again. Got about 50 miles down the road and it started skipping/missing and stalled when I pulled up to a light. Restarted okay, no F1 light at first but a couple miles further and the light came on. Limped home skipping and missing the whole way. Counted flashes after I pulled in at the house and got multiple 26 codes. Don't see the knock sensor causing missing and stalling so looks like I need to bite the bullet and replace the ECM. Found them online thru Honda sources and they seem to be running a little over $600. Anyone got a source in the states for ECMs? Or any other ideas that may cause my symptoms?

Since AZgl1800 said his 2002 runs fine with a 2004 ECM, go with the 2004 ECM. The 04 ECM runs $407.

Just thought I'd give an update on my FI issue I posted about earlier in this thread.

As Techdude and Greg both mentioned.... 99% of the time an FI code 26 is an ECU going bad. So I ordered a new Honda ECM from partszilla. Got it put in yesterday along with a new air filter while I was in there. She fired right up and I let it idle until the fans turned on then went for a ride. Bike runs strong and smooth and no FI light after over 100 miles. I plan to get out again soon an put in a few hundred miles but expect the same result....I'm confident its fixed.

I can't say enough how this board and also others like it has helped me gain the confidence to tackle repairs like this. Thanks again to all.

Glad it’s running good again. Thanks for the follow up. :D

Replaced the ECM and have about 200 miles on it, purring like a kitten so far, a 900 pound kitten with an attitude. Will post any changes down the road. Now working on the next trip.
