Necessary to periodically re-inspect for frame cracks?

Post by tamathumper » Wed Aug 01, 2018 9:15 pm

New to Goldwings, I bought a 2003 with ABS, CB, luggage rack, etc. with 52K on the clock for $6K.

After doing a lot more research, I've found and fixed a bunch of things, like rebuilding the forks from the second recent seal blowout (and found the previous seal was in upside down). Further, I nickeled the ADV tonight as a test, and the forks compress just fine now - they were stiff as hell beforehand because the ADV is frozen. I'll probably upgrade to progressives in short order.

My new concern is regarding frame cracks. I've looked at the frame where I can see it with side panels removed, and I don't see any cracks. I've verified that my VIN sticker is stamped in the right place, indicating the dealer inspected it at one time. But, do I need to have that re-inspected at any time? The bike was ridden two-up by the previous owner, but his wife was tiny and I don't believe they ever trailered. I'm just concerned about a catastrophic failure on the highway if such a thing is possible?

There are other areas that are known to crack on pre 05 models.

Here is a picture of where to look. The most common is right behind the passenger footrest. You will have to remove the passenger floor board and silver cover. You may also be able to see it from underneath the bike.

I too have an '03, and every time it's at the dealer for anything, I have them check the frame for cracks. So far, nothing. But I will continue to do so. It's kinda like knowing there's a chance of cancer because it's hereditary and you go in for the annual check up.

Thank you both.

Are cracks something that typically happen gradually, or do they ever happen catastrophically (causing an accident)?

The ones near the rear of the frame seem to come on slow. This was a design problem. The newer models had a heavier gusset at that triangle point.
I saw one that looked like a scratch in the paint, the beginning of the crack just beside the weld.

There has never been a reported incident of a catastrophic cracking which caused any accidents. Honda, in their favor, got right on this when it was discovered, and hauled bikes from all over the place to a central location to be repaired. I have heard of recracking, but it is not an often occurrence. Just keep an eye on the areas shown in that diagram and you should be good to go for many smiles and miles. And what I mean by keep an eye on is - if it is not cracked now, check again in a year or so or a bunch of miles. If you do not hit any really hard bumps, no need to check constantly. I would give it about a 2 to 3 percent chance of new or repeated cracks.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

There were 100s of bike produced that never developed any cracks
Some did crack - I won an '02 and my son has an '03 and we look them over pretty often and have the dealer inspect when we can -
Both bikes are around 50K and so far -- so good ...

I have a 2002 and there are no cracks on it anywhere.
