San Antonio trip

Post by DarthJ » Tue Aug 07, 2018 5:29 pm

Well guys, trip was a disaster. Ride out was good, hot, and some crosswinds, but, I just rode slow and steady when the winds sucked and picked it up when it died down.

Unfortunately, my speedometer quit appropriately 65 miles east of Ft Stockton, TX. Needless to say I was in cruise control, so I thought something was wrong. Once I realized what happened. I got her back on track speed wise, maintaining by hand (wrist was really bugging me when I got to the parking garage)

Trip was cut to Monday and Tuesday as there was a family issue requiring me to return. As I had no time to get it fixed and having no speedo for 500 plus miles is not a good thing, I elected to get a truck and trailer to make the return.

Got home, and just today, finally got the front wheel off and found exactly what I expected, the nylon driven gear was chewed up. The cable is fine. I can turn it with little effort and the speedo needle moves. So I plan to order 2 of the gears and an extra cable and next long ride carry them with me so.if this happens again, I can make a quick trip to an independent shop and get it fixed quickly.

DarthJ,
Hate to hear you had to hold the throttle that many miles. Even short 100 mile trips for me would be tough without cruise.

Had it happen before, but in town. That's why I ordered a spare, so I'll always have one handy should this happen again.

Gonna get the drive shaft and rear splines moly’d up which is all I have left to get bike road ready and hopefully we can get a ride in to South Padre later this year.
Wife found a nice condo with a garage in April and we spent a couple of nights there.
